joanie rockingham hasn't been seen or heard from in nine days. shomari stone spoke with her family tonight and has of the latest on the search. new at 11:00. >> i'm empty. >> reporter: they're concerned about her mother, 53-year-old joanie rockingham. >> i can't put into words how i feel. i wouldn't wish on anybody. >> reporter: d.c. police put out this flier calling her a critical missing person. officers are searching. no leads. the family haven't seen or heard from jo thanksgiving when she was helping her mother cook on the 3300 block of amy street northeast. >> reporter: did she seem upset or depressed? >> no. >> reporter: the family says that joanie rockingham was sitting on this end of the couch. she was in a good mood. no problems. she suddenly got up and walked right out of the front door. she didn't tell anybody where she was going and what makes this even more bizarre is that her family says she left her purse behind with her identification. >> i talked to my mom almost every single day, if she don't reach me she's leaving a voice mail

joanie rockingham walked out of her mom's house the day before thanksgiving without her purse and then simply disappeared. they had searched and plastered missing posters for the mother of three grown children everywhere they could. >> >> yeah. it was laying right there. >> almost three weeks after she went missing, a neighbor found a woman's body yet to be positively identified next to a garbage can behind an abandoned home on 34th street. >> it looks very suspicious right now. we will have to wait for an autopsy. >> reporter: neighbors say they have searched all across this area repeatedly for weeks, including here in the alley and over here in the driveway. they say she was not here up until now. >> yeah. we think that somebody dumped already here. definitely. she definitely was not laying right here. >> reporter: could she have been held and then murdered? still a mystery. >> i just believe that she put up a struggle. and i'm hoping and believing that some dna is going to show up somewhere. >> reporter: her sister says it will be a horrible christmas. >> that
