ed lee and ed harrington. that anything i wanted to do i went to one of the two of them because no matter what it was, even if it wasn't in their official area of duties, they thought it through and they understood the impact on the city and cared about making a difference. and i remember having many conversations with then director lee at both the human rights commission and at the department of public works and then later when he was city administrator. about issues impacting the city that went far beyond his scope that he knew how the city is all intricately intertwineded and he cared so much about it. it certainly was a shock to all of us. i know at countless event and whenever i would see him, he would ask about some small detail about the port. when we were having dinners, at other functions, he always came over and asked something specific and wanted to know what was happening here and he paid a great deal of attention to the port and i think he cared very deeply about the city as a whole and also what

there was a lot of value engineering, budget cuts, et cetera, but one thing was really important to ed lee at this point, the little door handles that had squirrels and things on them, ed thought it would be so great fort kids to open the doors when they saw the squirrels and other animals. we kept those in the budget and he personally screwed the door handles in himself. so here we are years later, he's the mayor and i'm the zoo director and he's standing in front of the door handles and he was tickled pink that the door handles was now there, he was mayor and i was zoo director and we were finally somebody. we thank him for that. and a chuckle, that's one of the bald eagles, one of the successful conservation programs and we were explaining to him we had to separate the parents from the offspring to protect the health of the eggs and we used technology to do so. he said i wish i'd has he that technology with -- had that technology with the two teenagers in my house. with peace and love. speaking of programs, there is a product of 300,000 children have gone through the doors now since the

i'm coming up my condolences to former mayor, ed lee. i felt he was a wonderful man, i felt he was a man who truly cared about this community. however, at the same time i just want to address issues that i do see. my son was murdered november -- january 9, 2015. i want you to know the status of that case. it was just offered with eric flemings, he's now the new judge of san francisco. however what he had to do was give up my son's case and all his other cases, so i was just informed that two months going into trial that now i have no attorney for my son and the four other boys. so unfortunately, katie steinle has been to trial, and one of her family stated that even though the immigrant was being sent back, so millions and millions of dollars are being donated to her fund. here, my son was murdered and the four boys seven months before hers and we're still pending. no one is really concerned about what we as african american women are going through. my other frent's son was just shot to death by oakland police department. it's been going

as an activist i've been thinking about ed lee. how could we honor his life? he didn't have it easy. he saw his father work his fingers to the bone while taking constant verbal abuse. like the rest of the chinese, his father was expected to work for low wages, live in match box rooms and keep his mouth shut. his father took the abuse and then died of a heart attack when ed was just 15. this tragic legacy angered and inspired lee to fight back, so while the fears of the law were heading for the corporate money, he joined the asian law caucus. at first out of fear of retribution, no one listened and then the rape and murder of julian wong stunned the city and after six months they won. i celebrate his courage and defense of tenants. it was by no means easy to choose this path that lasted for a decade. and i'm angry and disgusted that our system swallows up young activists like ed lee and turns them into pawns for the rich. that the young radical ed lee ended up as a mayor presiding over the largest exodus caused by evictions in san francisco's history is the tra

it's a little sad to be here without mayor ed lee. medical respite shelter and i remember the day he called me and said he was going to make it an important piece of the budget. while it takes some time for the build up, it's amazing we have this resource in our city here today. director garcia mentioned why i came to fight for the medical respite shelter, it was because when i was appointed acting mayor, much more briefly, my staff decided i would spend my first night as acting mayor in one of our single adult shelters in my district. in my first night there it became clear to me that homelessness is not just a poverty issue, it's a public health issue. the residents staying there were far oral far older and sicker than i imagined and we're seeing so many brothers and sisters aging in places on the streets. so i worked with director garcia to fight for our adult shelters and to see what the nurses are doing every day at sanctuary, next door, they are doing god's work. our residents need to see a nurse every single day and need the me
