one of the pathway teachers is a person i went to high school with and she's at glenn park elementary and her daughter goes to school there. thurgood marshal is represented. so i'm personally proud of her. the question i have is if there is anything worth doing to build community with the people going through this year. so they're going through and they may be disconnected. how are they, if at all, able to share, talk about their experience for themselves and the next class or telling people about using their stories to talk about more people coming to the program? >> thanks for that. i think that each of the programs have that cohort component. the pathway teachers this year are very close starting with the summer experience where they spent the 6 weeks together and then created a facebook group that they post on frequently. interesting to observe. and they come together on saturdays. because we know they're reliant on the coach-teacher relationship and on-line, we bring them together to integrate that and create a sense of community about every other month. so that's also happening.

i live in glenn park, i raised three children and my wife is a first grade teacher. we have been dealing with the issue of traffic and pedestrian safety all of our lives. and i can tell you that what's happened in 2017 is a big accomplishment. if you just walk outside and you see the volume of people, the volume of cars all the activity, and the fact that we are down in terms of the number of deaths is a huge accomplishment. it's a huge accomplishment and i think everyone should really take pride in that. the other thing to realize is for every person that dies, there's a dozen who were severely injured. so think of it as a pyramid. the whole pyramid is getting smaller. again, that's a big accomplishment. we all have to remember that all of us, all of us every single day no matter how you get to work, school, wherever you go, all of us are always pedestrians. this is really -- this impacts all of us. from a public health issue, one of the side effects of having pedestrian safety is that it really promotes community health. it allows people to walk more, to bike more,

i mean, he's -- we're in the same neighborhood in glenn park. our place to meet was a diner. and that's where he ate. the connectiveness of the ordinary lives of the people that live here was so deep, authentic and genuine and the way he worked every day to make everyone's life better and, you know, i was -- to my colleagues, i was -- he was so committed to doing something significant about homelessness. i was in his office yesterday talking about the state of emergency. and he and i have been talking about homelessness because obviously this is such a crisis in our city. and he always approached that issue with true compassion. he wasn't going to take a path that treated the people on our streets with less dignity than anybody else gets. he would not look at it as problem to be shoved in a corner. i agree with my other colleagues that he will be remembered as a truly great mayor. there was an expectation that he controlled everything that happened in the city. and no one can do that. he couldn't do it. we can't do it. it's a dynamic, growing, living city. but he did take on
