i said, no, they would not let black guys in then. beyond any possible level of aspiration or expectation, but it happened. why did it happen? because i got a quality public school education that i did not know was of that high-quality at that time. elementary school, junior high school, high school, and then ccny let me in with my modest average. then it was rotc at ccny that really made the difference. david: you were a geology major. did you think you are going into the geology world? >> no, i was the geology major because i busted out of civil engineering. ok? now you know. [laughter] colin: that didn't need to come up, david. thank you very much. david: so when microsoft is moving forward, you decide to take the company public in 1986, and at that point you are a billionaire? close to it? >> ah, yeah, pretty close to it. within a year of going public, i think. there is some fortune cover that says the deal that made bill gates $360 million or some weird thing like that. david: all right. how did it change your life? or it didn't

i said no doubt. [laughter] one of the great blessings of the last few years is that i do not have to be ceo. i have a ceo named tom has to worry about cash flow and budgets. i don't have to. i can be here with you. and so, it is kind of nice. i had a homey coming to my office in the morning and he said my lady, she is in a bad mood today. and i said why? he said you know she is beginning her -- administration. [laughter] i said well, i just finished mine so -- i kind of know what she's going through. [laughter] but my favorite one happened when i was at san fernando juvenile hall. in those days it was a big jim. 500 folding chairs and gang members mainly all mostly boys, males. and one row of girls, i think. and so i was sitting in the preside as chair and i was with my goal and they had these little sheets to have the readings in english and spanish. and so i had it resting on my lap and i said i'm going to listen to the word proclaims. i will not read along. so i close my eyes. in the homies got up

>> i went to work. the guy said he would take me back when i come back in the service if i wanted a job. so i worked for him for several years. then, i went to work for cadillac in pontiac in bloomfield and then i made the cuomo electric. that's a rural company that built lines. they put owl the lake of the ozarks lines down there. they had a bunch of fleet of trucks. i tossed to the bos boss and sa how about hiring me to be your mechanic and i will take care of these trucks? he said, i don't know about that. me and him talked for about a year. he said, how much are you going to have to have? >> i said, i want within a dime of what the linemen are making. he said, no, we can't afford to give you that kind of a job. we can't afford to do that. >> i said, heck, i have tools and all they do is buy a hook and belt and you funish all their tools. he said, no, we can't do that. his wife spoke up and said, jack, you can tell that man ain't worth a dime. that kind of hurt his feelings. two or three weeks later, he called me

i said, i understand, just wait. later in the afternoon, when folks started coming in, when he won by 100,000 votes, and the numbers of the turnouts were attributed to the african-american community, that's one of the times in modern times that that vote was shown to exist in virginia for a purpose. unfortunately, some of that is disappearing across america today, and people continue, in some instances to take that vote for granted. >> when you hear people think that vote is being taken for granted, when you hear young people, especially minority people today say they don't vote and don't get involved, what is your reaction to that? >> i understand it. i clearly understand it. when you're talking about we have to go to the base. what base? what have you done for the base? tell me what do you see today that means that the people who still live in terrible conditions, housing, the problems of education, everybody that runs for office is going to do something for education. if you're going to do something information ed

and i said how much money, and he said at least $10,000. said you work on getting permission from the district and i'll work on raising the money. and about a month prior to that i was with a local musician and he and i had first said to ourselves -- i said once we find a list, we should figure out how to put that headstone here. so that day stand ing with the cemetery director, he's a beloved musician here so i knew if we had artist power and musician power, we're going to raise the money. within three or four months we raised $14,000. carlos got permission from the bishop, the bishop agreed. so we installed a headstone right here behind me, and that headstone is now a 4 by 8 granite slab that is actually used to bury the bishops. and on that slab in english and spanish, it tells you the story of what happened and has the names of every passenger onboard including the crew as well. and then it has 32 leaves around the stone. because it's got these lyric. well, they're not just deportees anymore. and one of the beautiful things of this head
