let's get a check on weather now with nbc meteorologist bill karins.slow commute for a lot of people in the northeast this morning. also, what was you take on the storm yesterday? were you surprised by the amount of snow and you also have more bad news on the way. >> yes, the snow forecast was fairly decedent. most of new england got what was expected. a few spots got a little more. new york city got a little more than expected. heavy band set up over new york for about four hours yesterday. two to three inches higher than expected. the biggest surprise was the flooding at high tide in the boston and cape cod areas. this was between noon and 2:00 p.m. this was the highest water levels they've seen in boston harbor. topped the 1978 blizzard. that was going back, almost 40, 50 years. pretty incredible pictures of the high tide. now the temperatures in the single digits. how do you recover from that. hard even to tow those vehicles soaked in the water. here's where we are now. storm is exiting. only area getting snow is press kyle. the storm is gone. in t

. >>> let's get a check on your weather with nbc's bill karins. you're following an 8.2 the magnitude eshg that just occurred in alaska prompting tsunami warnings. >> we have see namemy watches in effect for the hawaiian islands and the west coast. this would tie the strongest earthquake we had aft year on all of our planet. this was about 280 miles southeast of kodak, alaska. it's just south of the alaska coastline here. here is where we get the concerns, though. this map is from the tsunami warning center and it shows the arrival times, how far the tsunami. we're waiting for confirmation on how big the tsunami is, where exactly it's located and how fast it's moving. this star here shows you where it occurred. this outer ring here is about a half hour ago, and that would be arriving in the pacific northwest possibly. it's not confirmed that anything horrible is going to happen there. obviously, the first areas that are going to be hit is right along the alaska coastline. that is only about 15 to 30 minutes after the initial earthquake took place.

. >>> and a check of your weather now with bill karins.ain and snow on the west coast. >> yeah, that will move across the country. of course yesterday at this time we were hearing the details about the earthquake in alaska. and there wasn't really much destruction and there was only a 3 foot tsunami wave that entered near compakodiak. so thankfully it turned out well. we also yesterday had some freezing rain that developed late in the morning, continued throughout the day. massachusetts, new hampshire, areas of maine and maybe you saw this, this bus was going up the hill and it did have kids on it, and it didn't stop until it hit that car right there. how scary was that for those kids and that bus driver. again, things have gradually improved, but it won't be until this even a that we start to melt a lot of that significant ice. so storm on the west coast, this is very typical. rain lower elevations, snow at the higher elevations. up to this point, the percentage of snow, 14% to 20%. we need the snow and we'll get it. about 12 to 24 inches
