it takes on that image of a place that time forgot. even then, you are just talking about pockets of the ozarks because you had other places, like northwest arkansas, that were quickly modernizing. in the last couple of decades of the 20th century and into the 21st century, demographics have changed. there has been a tremendous migration of people who do not come from that northern european, protestant heritage, whether they are of hispanic descent. in northwest arkansas, you have a large percentage of people of hispanic descent. you have the marshallese who have come in. you have got people from africa and asia who will come in. some of them becoming farmers in northwest arkansas and southwest missouri. you have an influx of people who have certainly changed the demographics of the region over the last generation and in the same period, you've also opened up the region to an influx of retirees from the midwest and north. things, just in my lifetime, there has definitely been a major evolution in whatever the culture of the ozarks is. i

america is a place that is very much changing in recent years. fayetteville to me has always been sort of a -- almost an oasis in many ways in the ozarks. it is on this springfield plane, which has been the most process -- prosperous subregion of the ozarks. from those earliest days, fayetteville was a begin of progress. if you go back before the civil war, arkansas had three colleges at the time of the civil war. two of them were right here in washington county. one was in fayetteville, an old one was just outside of fayetteville. you had a lot of the estate -- the state's early political leaders from the fayetteville area, the guys who served as the chair of the secession conviction -- convention. he was a lawyer and judge from fayetteville. fayetteville has had an outside importance in the state of arkansas and in the ozarks, in general. half a dozen years after the civil war the state of arkansas decides to put its flagship university in fayetteville. you can lookpens, at statistics today and look at the prosperity that comes with universities
