dick: let's see.he first decision would have been -- since it was a federal issue, firearm is a federal case, it went to the d.c. district court it is called. and let's see. it was a struggle to get there. flip-flopcision back-and-forth, and finally we won in the appellate court. d.c. said we are going to challenge this. emily: by saying you won, you got to the appellate court, which they are originally around the country. the d.c. appellate court said you won, completely owning guns. then the mayor said we would bring this to the supreme court. dick: exactly. emily: that was a tactical mistake am a well known by the mayor.- the d.c. it opened up a lot of people -- the supreme court made its ruling in 2008 in a landmark heller case that said, what? dick: the supreme court, my favorite quote -- there is a lot of stories, interesting stories to get to the supreme court, but my favorite story about the supreme court is that i did not know anything about the law. i did not know how this decision might go.

dick: i said, what are you doing here?hey said it was the greatest thing since, greatest gun decision that has ever happened. we are just so excited to be here. they were jumping up and down. i was like, ok. you cool. emily: they did not recognize you? dick: of course not. it was march the 18th, and it was very cold as the sun goes down. they are preparing to sleep on the concrete. i went to the local drug store and got two big bags of cough drops, 200 each and passed them out to everyone. i said you will need these. they said thank you very much. and i met a couple -- emily: did you catch that? he gave them cough drops to keep them from getting sick. dick: about four cough drops per hand that was held out. i met a couple, dave and colleen lawton, and she had the first smartphone i had ever seen and was telling me all about it. so we became real good friends real fast. and the next day, when the line was ready to go into the supreme court, i went down that line and shook everybody's hands and said, i am dick heller, thanks

it certainly is a strong stance being taken by the owner of dick's. he is a gun owner and a strong supporter of the second amendment but he does not want to be part of the problem when it comes to gun violence in the country. he has decided that all stores across the country will stop selling assault rifles like the ar-15, which was used in the florida shooting. in response to growing calls for gun control ceo edward stack said? a statement today, quote, we have heard you. the nation has heard you. he has already decided that his stores will stop selling any guns to people under 21 years of age and they will also stop selling high capacity magazines. it turns out the accused florida shooter bought a gun from a dick's store last year. although it was not the weapon used during the rampage at the high school in parkland. dick's main stores had already stopped selling assault rifles after the sandy hook massacre in 2012. but those weapons remained on the shelves at dick's outdoor chain called field and stream. there are no field and stream locations here

dick: i would frame it differently.ays felt that when i had a more diverse group of perspectives on a decision that needed to be made -- look, when you are a leader or manager 80% , of what you do is gathering input so that you can make the best decisions. if you have the broadest possible set of perspectives, that will be better than a very narrow set of respected. emily: in fact, you can move more quickly because you don't have two go run as people. dick: if you have got a leadership team sitting around the table that is 10 guys and your user base is 50% men and 50% women, you are going to have a serious lack of what half of your user base might be about why or how -- be thinking about why or how they use the base. we had a team that matches the user base at chorus. i always thought that was something you should work towards, to have more of those kinds of -- you know, let's -- less narrow socioeconomic, demographic, gender-based, etc. perspectives. emily: i continued with dick costolo and moved on to what else? twitt
