around 2:30 this afternoon, a former student from marjorie stone natural douglas high school returned to campus and opened fire, killing 17, wounding at least 14 others. in what has become a familiar scene in this era of heightened school violence in our country, students could be seen filing out of the building, running out of the building with their hands in the air as heavily armed members of law enforcement moved in to search the area. only today in florida some of the students could be seen if you looked closely holding valentines that they had received from their friends at school. the broward county sheriff's office has identified the suspect as 19-year-old nicolas cruz who was taken into custody about an hour after the shooting began. officials believe he was armed with one semiautomatic ar-15 style rifle and multiple ammunition magazines. inside the school, depending on how close the classrooms were to the gunshots and some of this video started appearing on social media within minutes. there was panic, there was screaming. as teachers tried to follow security protocols and s

nearly two weeks after a shooting at a school in florida they were greeted by supporters eyesight marjorie stone and douglas high school in parkland seventeen people were killed on february the fourteenth when a gunman entered the school and opened fire and one thousand year old former student has been charged with the shooting president trump has been meeting governess from around the u.s. with school safety at the top of the agenda let's get more from our white house correspondent kimberly how so what have we heard from that meeting kimberly. well the president has been holding a number of listening sessions this is a meeting of the governors around the united states here at the white house talking about the issue of school safety gun violence and how they can prevent a tragedy like we saw in florida in their own state there certainly is an indication the president feels a sense of urgency about this in terms of trying to put in place measures perhaps like an age restriction on purchasing a firearm ending the sale of bump stocks that don't increase the accuracy of a gun but certainly its firep

several law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation into yesterday's mass shooting at marjorie stoneas high school tells nbc news the shooter purchased the guns legally at a gun store in broward county, florida. sources did not give the exact location of the gun business that sold the weapon that authorities say was used to kill 17 people, wounding 15 others, again, in the worst school shooting in that state's history. the gun store is federally licensed least according to sources. joining me now is our guest, a former psychologist with the secret service, currently the director of threat assessment at georgetown university. and bobby chicon, who is a retired special agent. maurice a, i want to start with you now. you have a lot of insight about the minds of mass shooters and others. are you surprise add weapon like this would have been purchased legally? >> so let's talk about what we know about scoot shootings generally. what we've seen is it was never that difficult for a school shooter to get access to a weapon or to multiple weapons. so most of them that we've studied across the

my name is carson abd i'm a junior and i was at marjorie stone douglas the time of the shooting and i know that there are a lot of different solutions that we can go through to help eradicate this issue but one that stuck out to me was about all the drills and protocols that my teachers had to go through they knew what to do once the code red for an active shooter is announced but through research i found that only thirty two states require drills but of those thirty two states. more than half of the counties do not go through the drills because they want to spend their resources towards something else. and i know that a bill was also passed that declare that each school has to go through one drill each month but i know that my school we go through fire drills every month and we were we have not had our lockdown drill yet this year and i think a change that will increase all the training is in protocols call so if god forbid another sheet shooting does have been at least all the teachers we've repaired and can hopefully keep their students com. thank you. my name is ariana klein i wou

police say 17 people were killed in and around marjorie stone ham douglas high school. at least 15 others are hospitalized. five of them with life threatening injuries. we're waiting to see what their condition is this morning. and in just hours, this 19-year-old suspect will make his first court appearance. he is -- he's been transferred to the broward county jail. you're going to see new video right here. this is him in the wee hours of the morning being transferred. as you can see, he's in huffs and he's being walked in. these are the first shots we have of him in custody. investigators already finding disturbing social media posts from this suspected killer. as cnn learns he was getting treatment at a mental health clinic. and he legally purchased the ar-15 that he used in this massacre. so is, again, we're seeing the nexus of memory health and ability to get weapons. so this attack of course is reviving the gun violence debate. can congress do something this time to stop this carnage in schools? let's begin with cnn's rosa flores in parkland, florida. rosa? >> repo

deputies under increased scrutiny in florida after new reports that multiple deputies waited outside marjorie stone zimmerman douglas high school is a shooter attack students and teachers inside. and park visible land, the president called one of these deputies a coward. do folks down there feel the same way? >> reporter: there is glowing disgust and outrage how law enforcement failed to respond to the shooting. the fbi admitting it failed to properly investigate a tip about a caller that he is capable of shooting up a school was fired after it was discovered he stayed outside during the shooting was his boss, brown county sheriff said that deputy should have gone inside to kill the shooter and there are more emerging details, three sheriff's deputies on scene that day stayed outside. the sheriff acknowledging two deputies placed on restriction as an investigation into their actions that day, we don't know why those deputies stayed outside. shedding light on this the police department, ems and fire services in parkland, that police chief is sitting details on what went wrong today of the shooting.
