sarah murray picks it up here. >> reporter: another guilty plea for special counsel, robert mueller. former campaign adviser, rick gates pleading guilty to russian interference. gates pleaded guilty in d.c. court to conspiracy to defraud the u.s. telling friends and family in a letter, the last several months have been excruciating. gates is cooperating with the special counsel, the third trump associate to cooperate with the mueller investigation. the decision to flip on his long-time business partner, paul manafort, ramps up the pressure for manafort to cooperate with mueller, particularly about the campaign. >> i think these lawyers are putting so much pressure on these guys with so many high stakes that the ultimate decision is going to be i have protect myself and my country. >> reporter: charges unrelated to the campaign. in the charges gates' pleaded two, he outlined how they hid millions of dollars from the federal government and lied to investigators in 2016 about the scheme. investigators caught gates in a lie during an interview in plea negotiations earlier this month. he

let's get details from political could correspondent sarah murray. good evening to you.acks in syria. what are they saying. >> we know this is an administration that sometimes is hesitant to criticize russia over pretty much anything. but when it comes to this statement they were forceful. they say russia needs to live up to obligations when it comes to deescalation zones and stop taking part in any attacks, atrocities against the syrian people. it's a tough rebuke of russia's activities in syria. >> um-hum. so there is news tonight with the administration saying it warned the russian ahead of the 2018 midterm elections. what more can you tell us? >> that's right. so senior administration officials are trying to get in front of this narrative about how the administration is dealing with russian meddling. they say they have taken direct action to try to thwart russia's efforts. there have been warnings about this to senior russian officials as well as russian president vladimir putin. but it's not clear exactly what the direct actions are. we obviousry know there have bee

i want to bring in sarah murray with more on this breaking news. sarah, what is involved in this plea deal? >> it doesn't appear that they have struck a deal, according to the "l.a. times." we were reporting at the end of last week, they were finalizing this plea deal and gates was poised to cooperate. as part of this agreement, gates will testify against manafort. that was his co-defendant in the case. and they were facing financial charges that were unrelated to the presidential campaign and both of them pleaded not guilty. now according to the "l.a. times," gates can serve about 18 months in prison. that's very different than the risk i would have taken if he had began to trial. fe had gone to trial and been found guilty he was facing upwards of ten years in prison. this is money under a lot of financial pressure. he has a young family. four young children. so obviously he is moving forward to try and strike this deal. if you are paul manafort, co-defendant in this criminal case, obviously this is worrisome news for you that your former business
