abc's tom llamas at the jail here in ft. lauderdale, where cruz is being held. >> reporter: today, the 19-year-old accused of hunting down and killing 7 people at his former high school led into court in shackles. >> are you nikolas jacob cruz? >> yes, ma'am. >> reporter: authorities now retracing his steps in the aftermath of the rampage. the alleged gunman on the run for about an hour. police say cruz stopped by a local walmart and a subway, where he bought a drink. he then stopped into this mcdonald's. he was finally spotted by michael leonard, a police officer from a nearby city. officer leonard had decided to join the search and started driving down a back rod when he spotted someone who fit the suspect's description. maroon shirt, black boots. >> he looked like a typical high school student. and for a quick moment, i thought, could this be the person? is this who i need to stop? >> reporter: you see cruz here taken down and handcuffed. and tonight, authorities scouring his social media accounts, searching for clues and

want to go to tom llamas for more outside the shooter's home. morning to you. more and more police are showing up and they're searching this home where the alleged shooter lived with his friend and his friend's family and they're trying to figure out why exactly nikolas cruz did that at his former school. now, earlier this morning we got fresh video of the alleged shooter heading to the broward county jail in ft. lauderdale. that's where he will be held until he goes to a bond hearing. we expect that to happen later today. the latest numbers we're getting from police and from law enforcement sources are just staggering. 17 people dead. among the dead are students, of course, and adults, 15 injured including the suspect, and among those injured, at least five right now are fighting for their lives and we say those numbers and it is so painful and our thoughts and prayers go out to all those families. now, we do know that there were warning signs and spoke to friends and former classmates of the alleged shooter who say he was obsessed with guns an

our chief national correspondent tom llamas is also there in florida. he is outside the shooter's home about new details about his past. good morning, tom. >> reporter: robin, good morning to you. the police presence just behind me is getting larger by the minute. both local police and the fbi are now here just around that corner in parkland, florida, right here where the alleged shooter lived with a friend and the friend's family. in multiple the interviews with the alleged shooter's relative, classmates and former friends were getting a profile of a teenager obsessed with guns and who at least once before made a threat that he was going to shoot up his school and just last night a relative of the alleged killer telling us that he was adopted but his adoptive father died early on in his-and just months ago, robin, his adoptive mother died a painful and sudden death when she got the flu. several students who spoke with abc news say it was no secret the teenager you see in this photo was dangerous and even threatened to kill. >> he carried multiple guns.

and tom llamas is in ft. lauderdale and there's focus on a tip to the fbi now. >> reporter: that's right, george. there was a tip to the fbi and it involved social media. but the agency says they did not have enough information at the time. now, regardless of that we've been digging into nikolas cruz's background. and what we've been told is about a long struggle with mental illness and a history of violence. this morning, authorities describing the mind of alleged shooter nikolas cruz as warped and possibly demented. law enforcement sources tell abc news the 19-year-old gunman told investigators he heard voices in his head directing him to conduct the attack. and according to the arrest affidavit, cruz allegedly confessed to the killings after being taken into custody. cruz's lawyers say he was battling mental illness recently, magnified by the passing of his mother who died from the flu. overnight, a family friend telling abc news, lynda cruz was devoted to nikolas and his little brother. >> she never did a

our chief national correspondent tom llamas is here with the latest. >> the president's daughter-in-lawspeaking out after handling that suspicious envelope and we've learned what exactly that white powder was. this morning, the president's son don junior and his wife vanessa recovering from a scare. someone sending a suspicious envelope to a new york city apartment owned by don junior's mother-in-law. it was addressed to don junior but vanessa trump opening the letter to find a white powder inside. she called 911 just after 10:00 a.m. monday telling police she felt dizzy. >> respond to 44th, suspicious substance. >> reporter: firefighters treating her and two others at the apartment. then taking them to this hospital in manhattan for evaluation and precautionary tests. the powder later deemed to be nonhazardous and sources telling abc news that it was just cornstarch but the threat prompting the white house to react. >> i know the president spoke with her. beyond that at this point it's an ongoing and active investigation so i can't comment any further. >> reporter: sources tell abc new
