us study has found scented household items cause as much air pollution as cars. researchers focused on los angeles, but say the results could be applied to all major cities. i was joined earlier from austinld. i asked him just how these substances cause air pollution. well, first of all, thank you for having me here. volatile organic compounds, or vocs, contribute to a variety of air quality challenges, so one is ground level ozone formation, the formation of fine particles, as well as there's indoor exposure to chemicals that from — related to the emissions of vocs. so, basically when you're spraying deodorant, for example, or you're using household cleaning products, just the fact that the substances in them is evaporating into the air, that's what causes the pollution? yes. well, this is what astonished me, actually, about the study is you guys say more than cars? so, in los angeles, we looked at air quality measurements that were made as part of a large field campaign that the national oceanic and atmospheric administration in the us had conducted. and we saw in those measurements that it's about half and half between cars and the emissions from consumer products, as well as industri
