. >> let's go to jim acosta at the white house. what's white house saying about this report? >> well, as jem mentioned just a few moments ago, the president is calling this story that hr mcmaster might leave fake news. we know all too well when the president says something is fake news that doesn't necessarily make it so. in many cases it's probably the opposite of that. it's probably real news. with all the talk of these departures this week, we talked about hope hicks last night. tonight we're talking about the possibility of h.r. mcmaster leaving. you know, this is another sign of a white house that is just in this constant state of turmoil. i did talk to a source earlier this evening with respect to hr. mcmaster who said that there are some expectations that jgeneral mcmaster will go to the hoover institution, which is a leading think tank here in washington and out in california, which also has ties to condoleezza rice. the deal is not finished, but that is a possibility in terms of a landing spot for mcmaster once he leaves. >> if and when this happens, this will be the

joined by chief white house correspondent jim acosta. what is the white house saying about the new statement saying that sarah sanders is simply wrong. >> reporter: we went back to the white house press team in the last hour and asked about these new statements from stormy daniels' attorney, essentially alleging the president didn't winnie sort of arbitration procedure and also the daniels' lawyer that michael cohen and the president's legal team has been threatening and harassing her. they have not gotten back to us on that. wolf, it was pretty clear in the white house press briefing that the white house press secretary sarah sanders was struggling to talk about this issue. at one point she said the president has made it clear he's denied these allegations. that has not heaappened, wolf. we haven't heard from the president. my guess is the next time the president is in front of the cameras he'll be asked about this. >> sarah you said repeatedly you've addressed our feelings on that situation in regards to the stormy daniels payment. spe

a big night ahead starting with the gary cohn departure, and cnn's jim acosta at the white house, what are you learning tonight? >> everything is calm here, john, no chaos whatsoever. i haven't seen any in the last 20 seconds. yes, the president was pushing back on this notion that there's chaos inside the white house. and he was doing that as the white house communications team was preparing the announcement that gary cohn is leaving as the president's top economic adviser. it doesn't get more surreal than that. i will tell you from talking to a number of sources this evening, i talked to one senior administration official who really lamented gary cohn's departure, described gary cohn as a moderating influence inside the white house, somebody who could fill up the room with gravitas, that that will be lost as a result of his departure, and essentially he lost the argument on this tariff decision that the president has apparently made. that this was going on back and forth for the last week or so since the president made this surprise announcement to everybody. and then on the sunday t

jim acosta at the white house, thank you. let's talk more about the idea of pardons for paul manafort and michael flynn. sara murray is here. if it's true, that the former lawyer, dowd, brought up the idea of pardons, could that potentially be seen as obstruction of justice? >> well, this is sort of a gray area for legal scholars. one of the things we do know is the president does have these broad powers to be able to pardon someone. so it could be perfectly legal. i think the question is, what were the conversations surrounding this? if you had, for instance, john dowd promising to pardon either paul manafort or michael flynn if they agreed not to testify, sure, there might be something for robert mueller to look in there in terms of obstruction of justice. but right now, the reporting doesn't seem to suggest that. and again, the president is free to pardon whomever he chooses. >> you're also learning some more about these indications of a possible connection between the former trump camp, deputy campaign chairman, rick gate
