i am not only that. i am a black man. i am a father. have been charged with the mission of creating space for young people in a city that has been plagued with gun violence for far too long. i see before me today a generation of youth this off and ready to take on the real issues of our time. is i know that each of you knowledgeable enough to understand that americans gun violence epidemic did not start in the suburbs, and it is not isolated to our school. you nor organizations like black lives matter and the black youth project and dozens of others have been fighting for gun violence in places where the outrage are not afforded the same acknowledgment of their humanity or levels of external support as we are privileged to have here today. [cheering] if this movement does not come out of the suburbs, if it is not -- if it does not speak to domestic violence and toxic masculinity, if it sees to protect certain -- to serve some and not others, if it protects -- if it only succeeds in increasing the safety of those who already have advantag

that is what i am saying. think we are not really seeing what is going on and we are talking at it from a clinical point. host: brian, the point you made tofar as you said you want see all gun laws change, where would you start? caller: i would start with having no automatic weapons as far as in your home, you could have something to protect yourself, but as far as these military assault one's i think they should all be banned. i think we should have some insurance. people should be charged and have to pay because these people and have medical issues that are going to have to be addressed are going to be addressed by the taxpayer, so i think owners of these guns should have to pay and lose everything that they have. host: so you said you are a gun owner? caller: i had a shotgun in my house. host: what if the insurance the lady talked about became so much that it would stop you from the ownership of a gun? with that reconsider your position? caller: no. to be honest -- and i want to say this -- most people that

[applause] >> i can't tell you how excited i am to be here today. i would like to thank leader mccarthy for giving me the opportunity to speak today. i would like to take frederick richman of the congressional black caucus for being such a great influence and later even in my life here in congress. i would like to thank all of my colleagues who are here also. today, we celebrate a man who was a fighter. he fought for his own freedom and for human dignity at a time when it was dangerous for a black man to rise up and fight. frederick douglass was a legend when he was alive, and is larger than life even today. it is appropriate we celebrate him today on valentine's day. i want to talk a little bit about why i think it is appropriate or us to talk about him today, not just because today is the day he chose to have as his birthday, but as the driving force behind the things he has done. he was born into slavery, and he never wanted to be known as a happy slave. that is why when you see his pictures, he was incredibly turned. he has a serious look on his

caller: i am a former prosecutor. in the military, and i disagree with the state attorney general's decision not to take this case to the grand jury. i think that was a political decision to kill the case for it after two years, i think this case has been milked out in order to not have the community go out in anger. and because at least one of the police officers involved, the one i was fired, does have family connections within law enforcement that goes throughout the community. so i don't disagree with the police chief's decision to fire him and to suspend the other, but it has been two years, and -- justiceas delayed denied too many people. it felt like it was done perfectly to make people forget about, and that is not a good feeling for the community. host: margaret, culpeper, virginia. independent caller. caller: thank you. i was calling in reference to your last speaker, ms. kirsten. she really make people in law enforcement look really bad, ok, and i am not disagreeing with her and saying that you do have one o

i am a youth leader. i am a survivor. i have lived in south l.a.o duck from bullets before i learned how to read. [ cheers and applause ] my brother. he was in high school when he passed away. it was a day like any other day. sunset going down on south central. you hear pops thinking they're fireworks. they weren't pops. you see your brother's skin turn gray. ricardo was his name. can you all say it with me? [ crowd chanting "ricardo" ] i lost more than my brother that day. i lost my hero. i also lost my mother, my sister, and myself to that trauma and that anxiety. if the bullet did not kill me, the anxiety and the trauma will. i carry that trauma everywhere i go. i carry it with me in school, in class. walking home. and visiting loved ones. and i am not alone in this experience. for decades, my community of south los angeles has become accustomed to this violence. it is normal to see candles. it is normal to see posters. it is normal to see balloons. it is normal to see flowers honoring the lives of black and brown youth that have lost their live

i am 19. i am not very old. opinion, the nra, the whole money in politics thing -- we are turning into an oligarchy. that worries me. ofee no other way to get rid that than to vote out people that take money -- any type of money from any corporate interest. since citizens united basically stated that money equals powerm, and money equals in the electoral process, i was wondering if there is any other way besides voting every single one of these people out to fix that problem? guest: zachary, that is an excellent question. citizens united was decided in 2010. even if we were two sets of fully there successfully overturn citizens united, -- even if we were to overturn citizens united, it would take us back to 2009 and i think we had a broken system. a lot of exciting reforms are happening at the state level while congress is incredibly gridlocked. organization,my we have folks in every single congressional district, and stefan more than two dozen states moving these reforms. are innovative. empowering small donors
