roker. how is the day shaeping up? >> we can see already, the snow extends all the way back into indiana, down to virginia. and west virginia, and you're seeing it start to fill in here in the northeast and the snow bands haven't yet, the heavy ones haven't set up yet. as you can see, stretching down into the south, up into new england, 75 million people under some sort of winter weather advisory or winter storm warning. what we're looking for today, snow and gusty winds developing along the i-95 corridor, with snowfall rates of one to three inches per hour, once the heavy snow bands set up. overnight, the wet snow ends for the mid-atlantic. your boston area is going to see snow continuing on into the morning hours. and then thursday, snow continuing for maine with improving weather overnight. let's break down the snowfall totals, right now we're looking for generally down in washington, d.c., about three to six inches of snow. baltimore, four to seven inches. moving up i-95 to philadelphia, knife to nine inches of sno

al roker is monitoring it all. lay out the next 24 hours for us. >> add to that, as we look out west, flash flood watches with mandatory evacuations. 17 million people. tornado watches that will expire later this evening. and here in the northeast and new england, 72 million people under some sort of winter weather advisory. here comes the system. tonight the mid-atlantic sees the heavy snow. the northeast gets wind and snow all day tomorrow. new england gets the snow heaviest wednesday night. then it's going to be a heavy, dense snow. even though we're calling for six to eight in baltimore, 8 to 12 in philly, new york city, six to ten. even if we only get half of that, it's a heavy, dense, wet snow. like shoveling mud. four to eight inches in boston and in hartford. and out west, we've got a big storm system, a flood threat for the burn scar areas of the sierra foothills which could see upwards of ten inches of rain and a few feet of snow added to the sierra, but back here, lester, if you've got a lot of snow ther

al roker is with us. we love you, buddy, but you've been here a lot lately. >> i'm starting to wear out my welcome, lester. i understand. much of the country clear. into the northeast, the problems are there. chicago, delays there, and now getting into the meat of the storm as it develops. the only saving grace we've got. temperatures are going to be at or above freezing tomorrow morning when the snow is getting together. it's going to take a while to gain momentum and put down accumulations. in fact, new york city 39 by 5:00 tuesday. still near freezing into new england. here are the amounts we're looking for -- one to two inches in new york. lake placid, five to ten. hartford 4 to 8. boston, 8 to 14. blizzard warnings throughout much of the massachusetts coastline with the exception of boston. portland sees about 8 to 14 inches, lester. hopefully this is the last one, but the blizzard of 1888 happened in late march. so we're not out of the woods yet. >> you're welcome any time, but probably at the start

roker with a first check of the weather. al, are you still talking about another storm?> yeah, in fact we're talking a coast-to-coast storm that starts in the west and makes its way to the east by early next week. we've got rain down in southern california, but this is the culprit that is going to be causing all the problems coast to coast. here it starts off bringing in heavy rain and snow to the pacific northwest. northwestern california 1 to 2 inches of rain. snowfall of 1 to 3 feet, about 3,000 feet and higher up to 5 feet of snow. as this system moves to the east, we've got a risk of severe weather for tomorrow, damaging winds, hail possible, potential for tornadoes from central louisiana all the way on up into arkansas. the system will move east with rain and snow bringing strong storms to the lower mississippi river valley, continues east into saturday, causing heavy rain down south. here's where it gets interesting. we're calling it #foureaster. we've been seeing this online in social media. the system moves to the southeast, then transfers its energy off the coa
