defazio. i rise in opposition to the denham amendment which would overturn a federal court decision that determined that california male and rest breaks apply to truckers. 17, the supreme court ruled that they must allow for 30-minute meal break after five hours of work and 10 minutes rest break after four hours. this is reasonable when you consider that truck drivers can be subject to 14 hours on on-duty time. this amendment would not only preempt california's law and preempt laws in 21 other states and territories. this amendment is harmful because it preempts that would prohibit local states from enacting laws that impose any additional obligation on motor carriers. laws our truckct drivers. mr. chairman, states should be allowed to set these important standards for truck driver working conditions as they see fit for the health and safety of their workers and also for the safety of our citizens. i ask my colleagues to oppose the denham amendment and i ask unanimous consent to include into t

peter defazio: i don't believe the faa has kept up. stephen: congressman peter defazio of oregon says right now, the faa does not pay appropriate attention to unapproved parts. peter: one critical component that isn't up to manufacturing standards could take down a plane midair. stephen: that concern prompted him to ask the faa's inspector general to weigh in. peter: a lot of our airlines have outsourced their heavy maintenance to overseas, where you know, one criminal could put in a part that's going to cause a critical failure in that plane. one terrorist could put in a part that intentionally is going to fail. stephen: citing record-keeping weakness, lack of management control, as well as inaccuracies in tracking unapproved parts, the inspector general reports said the faa's oversight of industry actions to remove unapproved parts is ineffective, and the faa cannot be assured that the unapproved parts no longer pose a threat to safety. stephen: are you going to change that? is there going to be changes under your administration? ste

i appreciate chairman shuster working with ranking member defazio to ensure that this bill is as bipartisan as possible. i would have preferred that we did more to assist our nation's airport, but this bill reflects the committee's will. airline safety is on all of our minds, especially after the tragedy of southwest flight 1380. moving this bill forward without the poison pill lang wadge we have seen in previous version -- language we have seen in previous versions will go a long way in improving passenger safety, passenger comfort and the entire experience on our nation's airlines. following my work to return the ontario international airport to local control, we've seen my hometown airport go through a renaissance. with new flights being added constantly. it is my hope that this bill continues that growth and allows for more improvements at the airport. while i am pleased this rule does make in order an amendment i offered to assist ontario airport and airports like it, there are many amendments which were not made in order. one such amendment i want to mention is representative cart iot
