[laughter] i typed in 1942 rose bowl. not a tremendous amount of research by what i read was fascinated by how the scheme was transplanted from pasadena to durham north carolina and that is what started to peak my interest in this story. what i didn't know at the time i wrote the sports illustrated story and certainly not even during my research is that of the 80 men who coached and participated in the game, only one is still with us today. if i had written this book three or four years ago it would have been a completely different book i literally had to reconstruct the stories of their lives without them there without first or second hand knowledge so one of the gratifying things for me in the early research process was just trying to find a family member i would be all mine trying to find the name of a son or daughter and finally tracked him down after two or three months. i wouldd introduce myself and say i'm writing a book i would love to talk to you about your dad and world war ii and the rose bowl. most of themd m
