ali made a simple request to be called muhammad ali. none of the major american newspapers would refer to him that way. one guy at the inquirer, of all places, his name was sandy pathway, had a social conscious. he was a progressive at a conservative institution. he wrote about muhammad ali and called him muhammad ali in his column. i found this one column that portrays of this whole issue in an interesting light. throughout the column, he was talking about how he had been banned from boxing because he refused to be inducted the army. the headline written by the editors referred to him as clay, which i found just astounding. it was shocking. and it was not unique to the inquirer. it was anywhere you went. he was referred to as clay. he was demeaned and derided as outspoken. the model of a black athlete in -- the bottle for a black athlete in the minds of these journalists was joe lewis, a quiet, unassuming guy who did whatever his handlers told him to, never made any waves, was a great athlete. muhammad ali certainly did not fit that mold and there was great resentment in the american sports pages. they refused to accept him. there were a few exceptions. for the most part, it was an extremely embarrassing chapter in american history. you could see it lay out all through

(mk)marc mangaccat was born in the same home he died in front of last week in daly city. myrna mangaccat, victim's mother"he was not responding and there was blood coming out here and then i saw a hole here."his mother heard the gun shots.mangaccat"every time i think of it i always burst into crying."michelle kingston, @mkingstonnewslaw enforcement say the suspect walked up to mangaccat's car and fired five or six shots right here on abbott avenue ... killing him with his girlfriend in the car.thandar seinsa, victim's girlfriend"he said honey, honey, somebody shoot me so i'm looking at him and he's breathing heavy so i'm so scared."thandar seinsa worked with the suspect -- 31 year old kevin prasad -- at san francisco international airport and said they used to be friends.seinsa"now i don't know him anymore"she told law enforcement the night of the shooting was also her last day of work -- and she was planning to move to las vegas with mangaccat and their daughter.prasad wanted to end their relationship. he was jealous and wanted to date her. steve wagstaffe, san mateo county district attorney"he knew she would be leaving and he really wanted a relationship with her so he had made the decision that if the boyfriend is out of the picture then he can come in to the grieving widow as it were and start a relationship that way."prasad and the man police say was driving the getaway car -- 25 year old donovan rivera -- are both facing murder charges.and could face life in prison if convicted.in daly city, michelle kingston, kron 4 news (vicki) new at nine... in the south bay, san jose police announced this week that they have arrested 16 people in connection with a series of robberies, carjackings and residential burglaries. the arrests have prompted many people who have recently been robbed to wonder if the same people are responsible. kron 4's charles clifford is live for us tonight in sunnyvale where he spoke to someone who had over- 20-thousand dollars worth of stuff stoeln.. charles? sunnyvale residents nick brown and tara clark say that this past weekend someone ransacked the storage lockers at thier apartment complex. tara estimates that the thieves made off with thousands of dollars worth of items like tvs and bikes. the thieves also stole nick's prized collection of musical instruments.soti noticed my saxaphone, my flute my guitar, on monday ,the san jose police department announced that they had arrested 16 people. . 11 juveniles and 5 adults. . who had allegedly been working as a gang to commit car jackings, robberies and residential burglaries all across the south bay.sotthese crimes accord all over the city of san jose. there were also crimes that we arrested them for outside of the city of san jose and even santa clara county so they are very mobile. while they have no evidence that the gang robbed their appartment complex, tara and nick wonder if the same group of people could be responsible for the thefts.sotwe had a bunch of units that were all broken into seemigly at the same time. we also had a lot of larger items that would have been hard to carry with just one or two people so that seemed pretty consistent. police are investigating these thefts but so far there's no indictation from law enforcement, in sunnyvale or san jose, that the same gang is to blame.nick and tara just hope that who ever did this will be brought to justice and that their possessions will be returnedsoti would like to get these items back for one i would also like to see the people responsible brought to justice.sotwe are hoping to get some kind of resolution and really just find the items. anyone with info should call the sunnyvale police department. in the south bay, charels clifford kron 4 news. (grant) we now know the name of the person shot and killed in albany sunday night. albany police found 23-year-old raphael fuentes-lee on masonic avenue, near the ohlone greenway. this is video from the scene. he was taken to a hospital where he died. police arrested kayla gibson-wytch of berkeley and thomas shima-mura of oakland. both have been booked into the alameda county jail for murder. (vicki) in morgan hill --- a police officer is on leave after accidentally firing his weapon. it happened around 7-30 sunday night. that's when police were called to the area of cochrane plaza. it was over reports of a stolen van. officers found the van...and a chase ensued. the chased ended less than 2 miles away then two teen girls got out of the van and walked toward officers. the 16 year old driver stayed in the car. officers directed the girls to the ground...when the officer accidentally fired his weapon. one teen was hit near her eye by a bullet fragment. now the officer is under investigation.
