my name's andrea perez, and i'm a student at the university of san francisco. i'm here to request removal of the statute, early days. the statue's a misrepresentation of our history as a state and as an sf county. the native depicted on the statue is a plain indian, so it doesn't have the historic -- it doesn't honor our history even if it is a painful history. the experience of california tribes at the time was distinct due to the mission system, and the mexican vaqueros who are also depicted in the statue led to a lot of pain in the tribes even father sierra understood he had to control them by imprisoning them because they were going on killing sprees. you can read man, the dark side of democracy, and he explains how there was a native american genocide that was still not acknowledged and recognized. and rick swig compared the statue to the holocaust memorial at lands end, and while he is justified in doing so, it doesn't honor the lives lost, and it pictures a group of people that were in part responsible for the genocide that occurred.
