our correspondent chris buckler has the latest from hawaii. a lot of these areas have now been completely blocked off because the national guard are here and they are protecting people and keeping people away from the volcano. last night, we went in with the national guard and took a look around that area in leilani estates and you could see the hugejets of lava going high into the air from some of the fissures that have come from this volcano, these volcanic vents that have cracked open the land and continue to eat their way. sometimes, above the sound of the fissure opening up, you could hear the helicopters as they went in to rescue people from their homes. it gave you a real sense of the concerns that this volcano was causing. there was also overnight an eruption in the volcano itself, sending an ash cloud 10,000 feet high into the air. however, at the moment, people are waiting for another serious eruption. the most violent eruption in recent days happened on thursday. certainly, people are here and concerned and waiting for that to happe
