emmer: first i have to back up. the reason i got involved in this -- this is something tom harkin was the champion of. this alphabet soup of washington, d.c., there is a program that was originally established in 2008 in the farm 2008, and the idea was to create grant money, a pool of grant money for local communities, rural communities to try and roll out mental health programs, different options for our farm communities and, quite frankly, those that are under serious stress in our economy. i got involved because i had a staff member -- this has been an issue in our office. le the health care in this country is extending lives. suicide has been on the rise. we in my office have been very concerned about our returning veterans suffering from ptsd and other issues. i had no idea until it was brought to my attention in the farm communities, suicide is five times the national average. host: why? rep. emmer: it is a lot because the folks are independent, they are on their own, and they can't control variables like weat

come in a minnesota congressman thomas emmer.that particular district, duluth, surroundings there, why is that likely considered a gop pickup? >> several reasons, stuart and thanks for having me. first off the demographic forgets the forgotten men and women president trump has been talking to now for a couple years. you have a huge mining industry in northern minnesota. you have a logging industry in northern minnesota, quite frankly has been shuttered from people on the left who don't believe that we are able to protect our environment while exploring and potentially developing some of the world's richest natural resources. i don't know if you're aware, stuart, northern minute south with the iron range, has if not the largest copper nickel deposits in the world. they're hardy people. they want to work. they're looking for leadership. we have a district called minnesota's 8th congressional district is open seat. the democrat who represented the district the last two congresses is retiring. it is an open seat. we have a candidate

[laughter] we worked to block all the bad things we could and to keep the embers, the emmers about ofjority and began putting the brakes on the obama agenda. we were together again last year, just after president trump and our unified republican government arrived in washington. we were just starting to translate our conservative principles into policy. so it is always great to be with all of you because i know you share our views. and are excited about what we're trying to achieve for the country. it is a lot of fun when you have as much good news to report as we do. in my view the last 16 months have been the single-best period for conservative values since i came to washington as ralph indicated back in 1985. this is not hyperbole.
