so, senator langford and i have introduced the secure elections act. two members of this committee, senator graham and senator harris were involved in this, and cosponsors. ere able to get $380 billion in the last budget and that money is not going out to the states to help them shore up their election infrastructure. both leaders supported this and we were able to get this done. we have a number of states that don't even have backup paper ballots. we are hopingthat change. illinois s had issues in the past and hackers got as far as their voter files. do you think these resources would be helpful? >> yes, thank you, senator. absolutely, i think they have already been lpful. the department worked with our government coordinating council to create guidance for state and local election officials to use, to help inform the use of that money on a short and long- term basis, focused on addressing possible and known vulnerabilities, as well as long-term important issues like auditability, training for state and local officials, as well as defensibility. i thi

i'll speak with senator james langford of the intelligence committee and our correspondents are standing by with full coverage. our top story, the president's personal lawyer michael cohen is breaking with his legal team as he faces a federal investigation in new york. our national correspondent is joining us from new york with theest. brin, what is the latest? >> reporter: wolf, what we know is that this is a legal team that has been by the side of michael cohen ever since early april after the raid by the fbi of his home and his hotel room and his office. and we know they've also been by his side through the legal proceed gz and several court proceedings where they fought to conceal some of the documents taken during th raid claiming attorneyt privilege so this is significant that he'll be likely be set to split with the attorneys, some based here in new york and some in d.c. now for the reasons -- those are not one 100% clear but there is speculation and there is a lot of things out there right now that could possibly be the reasons. for one, we're hearing from a source that michael c

so, we have a bill, senator langford and i along with senator harris and graham and warner and for and heinrich and collins called the secure election act and we have been working to make changes and introduce it as amendments but it does four things. first of all, it improves information sharing between local election officials, cyber security, experts and national security personnel. second, providing for the development and maintenance of cyber security best practices. we all know that there are five states that don't have backup paper ballots and there's something like nine more that have partial backup paper ballots and while we are not mandating what each state does and we do not want each state to have the exact same election equipment we think that would be a problem and it could potentially lend itself to more break-ins. we think it is important that we have some floor and standards that given what we know i don't think we be doing our democracy any good if we did not sure that we did not put in some floors. third, the bill will promote better auditing. our pick up after syste
