americans gave it a lot of reasons to support the southeast asian refugees. many americans rooted support in the idea that the united states is an exceptional country, an immigrant country that has special status and history as a refuge for the scorned, hated, and hunted. one 1975 public opinion survey found the leading reason why americans supported the admission of southeast asian refugees was a tradition of the united states as a sanctuary. the same poll found that most agreed with the statement that the united states began as people of all races and nationalities. so we ought to let the refugees from vietnam in. throughout the cold war, americans continue to feel an obligation to people who were fighting against communism, people who were less fortunate and faced retribution and persecution. this was another reason why a lot of americans were open to accepting southeast asian refugees. a 1986 poll found that a majority of respondents agreed the united states should accept political refugees fleeing communist countries. the result of the context of the viet

i have made the case this entire semester that asian american history is american history. this is true for refugee history as well. today i will talk about asian refugee migrations that took place for decades ago. migration i argue, change the course of refugee history in the united states for the decades to come. i am going to talk about refugees known as ugandan/asian refugees and southeast asian refugees. 1970's andd in the --0's, some as late as than the 19th century. the migration of these refugees was a turning point in several different ways. in the 1970's, refugees were accepted for new reasons. time, the united states was not just accepting refugees because they opposed communism, the united states was excepting refugees on the basis of emergent humanitarian commitment to human rights. periodtwo, during this refugees were accepted and settled in a new way. we are talking about a huge refugee migration here. over one million southeast asian refugees came to the united states in the last couple decades of the 20th century. that refugee migration, and the amount of wo

this one was filed by a group of asian american students against harvard claiming it discriminates againstadmission policies and that's illegal. it's another front in the attack on affirmative action. and what the justice department says that in a statement by attorney general jeff sessions, no american should be denied admission to school because of their race. in their filing today, the government says that harvard uses a personal rating to score each applicant on factors such as positive personality, likability and being a good person and that it tends to score asian americans lower on these personal ratings than other applicants and that reflects racial stereo typing. harvard has said it does use race as one factor in admissions in order to achieve a diverse student body and this is something the supreme court said schools can do. there have been efforts to stop affirmative action, two recent cases in are the supreme court and though the court allowed it to continue, it narrowed it. what this lawsuit says is that harvard is outside the bounds of what the supreme court has said. a coupl
