joining me now to discuss democratic senator jeff merkley, who has visited some of the detention centersnts and kids have been kept. senator merkley, thanks for being with us. do you have any understanding as to why the government thought it was the aclu's responsibility to relow -- to find these parents, to essentially right these wrong in the first place? it wasn't the aclu that separated the kids from their parents. >> no, absolutely not, anderson. the situation is that the government has so botched the connection between the parents and the children that they'd like to shed that responsibility and put it off on to someone else. when they sent the parents back without their children, and many of the children of the 700 still not reconnected to their parents, 500 or so their parents have been deported. they didn't track carefully where the parents would be. we don't know if they have more information than they revealed in terms of phone numbers or e-mail addresses. but in terms of street dresses, many of their files just say things like sin calle which means without a street, or maybe

us now from the capital we got a member of the foreign relations committee, democratic senator jeff merkleywith us. you said something that caught my attention about donald trump and his selection for the supreme court. you believe that the president of the united states shouldn't even be able to nominate a justice at the supreme court at this point because he's under investigation. explain that. >> well right now there's this enormous conflict of interest in which the president is under investigation yet he's nominating an individual who will essentially play a significant role in questions like can the president pardon himself or can the president fire the special prosecutor. it isn't so much that he can't nominate but i don't think it's appropriate for the senate to proceed with these hearings until this investigation is cleared up. >> senator, this is walter isaacson. you've been talking about a resolution dealing with putin, the russian investigation. what do you think the senate should be doing now when it comes to the president's meetings with putin, when it comes to this russia inve

people have coverage, many proposals we see out there, whether it is standards or -- sanders or jeff merkley'slan would also bring up the level of coverage. we are talking about taking people who currently have medicare or medicaid and making plans more generous. host: what factors have to be in place to make this a serious reality? what do you have to see as far as the way our government works or economy are other factors to know that perhaps we can move in this and make it a reality? emily: i think we need to talk about financing. to haven't really been talking about how this plan would be financed. how much additional, do you want to add to the deficit? folks have been talking about orply doubling income tax how much additional payroll tax would it take? maybe 18% if you are two final additional, existing medicaid and chip money into it. i think we need to thoughtfully discuss how much we want to spend. and how we would finance it. who would bear the burden? i do think it is a discussion we need to have because it is not right that nearly 30 million people in this country, the richest natio
