one of the finest hours in the history of the marine corps. they certainly had their share of fine hours, but this is a tougher fight than anybody anticipated. we tried to show that in the way that we lined up the gallery. there's a lot of things happening. there is a forbidding environment. it is as if you had stepped off earth and gone to a different space. that is how they felt. we have here, one of the most fascinating display cases, i think, at the entire museum. the artifacts here were in possession of an officer who was in the first marine division, who fought in the battle. he had a close encounter with a japanese officer, who raised his didn't have enough time to get it out of the scabbard, and whacked lieutenant mcinerney on the helmet -- lose and he raised his sword and whacked him on the lieutenants helmet. if you come over here, you can see his helmet, which still has the crease in it from where it was struck by the japanese officer's sword. he passed out, but he shot the japanese officer and killed him in the course of this event
