ron brown. ron, to you first, with the big picture here and the implications for the coming m midter midterms. every special election, we say focus on the final margin, not who won. what does this say? >> this put a big you sharpie underline on everything that's been happening since donald trump's victory in 2016. on the one hand, there was an unmistakable move toward the democrats in this district. o'connor won 65% of the vote there. an unprecedented showing for a democrat. he gained as well in delaware county, and not as much. that's what ultimately sank him, and republicans retaining very big margins with slightly disappointing turnout in the rural parts of the district. that's what we saw in virginia, alabama, and in pennsylvania, the distribution of the district was a little different, which allowed republicans to maintain this narrow lead. the incumbent had never won by less than 64%. but it points towards a november election in which the democrats are in a strong position against republicans where donald trump is much less popular than a republican president usually is. and democrats facing a tougher climb in rural areas. and the challenge is to find common ground between these two pieces of the country. and points to a 2020 battle of the bulge election. >> a battle of the bulge election in 2020. okay. but a win is a win, donald trump likes a win. he tweeted a short time ago. when i decided to go to ohio, he was down in early voting, 64 to 46. that was not good. after my speech, there was a big turnout for the better. troy will win big in november. so, how much is this a win for donald trump, keeping in mind he was up one point before the election, and looks like he will win by one point. >> he held steady against an opponent who was rising. how much of this is a win for donald trump? only in the sense that he did no harm. i do not think the president can point to this and say, look at this victory. this is a district won by mitt romney, by donald trump, should be a solidly republican district. and the president of the united states coming, throwing his political weight around, and about 1,700 votes dividing the candidates, and may have a forced automatic recount. i don't think anybody can put it into a win category. >> and frank lutz tweeted this, a one-point victory in that district is nothing to commend. the gop have to do something really significant to keep the house in november. >> this was a district which leaned 14 points more towards republicans than the whole of the country. >> well, it turns out despite what the democrats, mainstream media, elaine snyder, explaining why it will go democrat, and why it will be the nemesis for trump, the democrats lost big. they spent twice as much money. >> that's not true. >> planned parenthood alone matched the rnc. >> the candidate raised more money than the republican candidate. >> at the last minute, that's true. >> facts. facts, shawn. >> but still, the democrat had more money than the republican. outside groups came in, and we don't know the final amount. over 100 unions put money into that race. >> okay. >> this was a litmus test if you have a so-called moderate democrat, looked good, nice guy, divorce attorney. he had all the things going for him. yet, the democrats couldn't do it in that district. it's a failure. only a democrat could lose an election that has all this popularity behind it, and call it a victory. we need more victories than that. >> how can it be not be regarded as a victory for a democrat when it's a republican district? >> we're talking facts here. with all due respect to shawn, the fact is, i will say this. it was more symbolic than substantive for the democrats. yes, they had some gains, but ultimately, they did not win. >> that sounds good. say it again. >> but the question is, whether donald trump took a safe race and put it in jeopardy, or put the republican candidate over the top. i think it's the former more than the later. >> balderson campaigned on the gop tax cut, and the strength of the economy. then switched to negative campaigning against o'connor. >> that's troy balderson, he's running for congress. why do those people look so happy? because balderson supports a massive tax break. and what will that mean for us? balderson's plan could mean cuts to medicare and social security. >> so, what does it say when the republican tax cut doesn't actually work as a campaign message in the wealthiest district in the state of ohio? >> it is striking, they ended up emphas em fa sizing the cultural-type themes of the president. accusing him of being in favor of open borders and amnesty. and trump is strengthening their hand in rural areas, but driving away a lot of white-collar voters. not to mention, he's animating and alienating millennial and minority voters. this was an 86% white district, and you didn't have any kind of minority presence as part of the equati equation. i think you draw a straight line from virginia, alabama, and pennsylvania, and it points towards significant risk for republicans in suburban areas everywhere. on the other hand, it shows how much of a headwind democrats still face in rural areas, and points towards democrats still having the overall advantage of winning the house. and the likelihood of this extreme division after the elections. and the reasons mopublicans mos uncomfortable with trump's policies are the ones most likely to lose. >> the tax cut is becoming increasingly unpopular, down to 34% approval. by november, by the time the midterms come around, will the republicans even be talking about this tax plan? >> if they don't have other legislative wins to talk about, they will talk about the tax cuts. i think there will be a lot of the wedge issues. but the people talking most about the tax plan will be the people we saw in this election. and the democrats will say, do you like your social security, medicare, being able to eat and feed your kids? you may not like this tax cut that much. democrats can show charts of the national debt ballooning exponentially. and the other thing that's problematic, people aren't feeling it in their pocketbook. working people, even blue-collar, lower white-collar people are not saying, look at all the extra money i have in my bank account. maybe i will vote republican again. i think we'll see much more of the cultural wedge issues from republicans. >> and the flip side, the democrats in all the special elections, they seem to be fairly consistent in the elections, putting forward moderate candidates, distancing themselves from pelosi, and some have avoided going after donald trump. >> they're speaking to their would be constituencies. speaking directly to the issues of the congressional district or that state. i think you should do that in a midterm election, because there's no singular person people will coalesce around for the party. so, they need to speak to the specifics of that district. >> looking at the rallies that donald trump held during this campaign for ohio, a lot of people turned up there. and there are a lot of grievances. but the president never puts forward a lot of solutions. >> the grievances are real. >> but no solutions. >> that's not true. for the longest time, the blue-collar class has been ignored by both parties. flyover country, the working person, working with their hands. they were always in democrat control, they were loyal democrats. and donald trump introduced middle class republicans to this forgotten blue-collar class. you get the middle class with the working class, it's unbeatable. what are the solutions, how about the best economy since clinton and reagan. the lowest unemployment in the black community. >> why don't republicans campaign on this? >> the best economy in your life. >> why did republicans switch the message halfway, about a month or so, into the campaign, if the economy is great, why was the message changed to attack o'connor? >> they can't run on their record. that's why. >> quickly. >> both sides turned to a vicious attack against each other. our side wanted to win more than the democrats did, and the democrats lost. cnn viewers, despite the fact that it says not decided, it's decided. >> with that, we'll take a short break. when we come back, donald trump also had his choice for the kansas governor's race. we'll see if the president's endorsement paid off in that race. and a rough day of questioning for paul manafort's former right-hand man. we'll talk about the trial, and how it ties to the trump campaign. save 15% or more by... ron brownants. ron, starting with you and what the president did just before heading to the rally, insulting lebron james whose home state is ohio head tlg to rally voters in a very important race. do you think this new fight of sorts was a political calculation? >> oh, it's clearly a political calculation. not specific to this district. but look it's a political calculation in two senses. first, the president as we talked about before views as an essential part of the political strategy picking an endless succession of culturally continuinged racially continuinged fights on twitter with an assortment of opponents but the racial component can't be overlooked. and there is no question there is a pattern of not only criticizing but insuling prominent african-americans, often nlts but not exclusively. he describes maxine waters been in congress for decades as a low iq individual. by the way, the two stories are link. this district he is on his way to is not a place that would have been in the top 50 that anybody was talking about when the year began as a potential republican vulnerability district. but it is now on the knife's edge. larnlly because of the recoil from president trump among ordinarily republican leaning white collar suburban voters who view his values his morals the way he talks about race as essentially unfebl. the npr marris pole. two thirds of college educated whites said they were embarrassed by president trump. that sentiment is exactly why he has to go there. that's what made it competitive. >> and david, this reminds me of something are senator kamala harris said at the conference last night she said russia new america's weaknesses citing racism, anti-semitism and sexism as a way to divide americans. >> the russian know the truths. because check it out. they attacked demographically and geographically. and they're still trying to divide us and conquer. the russians know racism and other forms of hate have always been america's achilles heel. and we need to deal with that weakness. >> do you think russia is watching, david what happened in the last 24 hours of this feud between the president and lebron james, the first lady getting involved and smiling right now? >> absolutely. you see there is an old truism in intelligence that a covert action program can't create something. it has to build on the environmental conditions already there. and what we saw in 2016 is the russians exploiting these differences. but we do have a parallel to this, which is the nfl take a knee controversy. and the hashtags on twitter and all of the facebook posts. a lot of this was amplified and promoted by russian bots and trolls. there is no reason to suggestion that this has change. the russians haven't learned there is a penalty for this that it don't work. they have learned the opposite. i wouldn't be surprised to see the president make a remark about it. then you see a massive amount of traffic on the social media about in very thing because the russians are going to amplify whatever the president says to continue that division. >> the big news out of the last rally were these comments. >> now we're being hindered by the russian hoax. it's a hoax. okay. i'll tell you what, russia's very unhappy that trump won. >> that was on thursday. that came hours after trump's top security officials warned of the ongoing threats from russia. laura, you testified this week on the russia threat. you say consistent messaging is important. why? >> it's absolutely essential, ana. when the president talks about the russia hoax just hours after the senior members of his national security cabinet lined up and sent a clear signal about how real the threat is and that it's ongoing he is directly undercutting them. when we are trying to deter an adversary one of the things that's important is that that adversary believe our word and believe when we say there will be consequences there will. and unfortunately vladimir putin is seeing mixed messages from the president and from his cabinet. and similarly, the american people for the reasons that you just talked about, the fact that they are -- the russians are exploiting these vulnerabilities in our society, what we need to do to make ourselves less vul they were abel is in part build resilience but we can't do that if the american people are getting a mixed message about whether the threat is real. the president has to get onboard board with the program. >> and we know the u.s. is really vulnerable to attacks, especially when it comes to cyber-attacks. yet we have politico reporting the that the fisher is struggling to retain top cybersecurity talent including the agent tasked with disrupting digital threats from russia and elsewhere, close to 20 have left in the last five years. is there reporting how concerning is that. >> one of the things we need to get on top of this threat is a coordinated whole of government strategy. and until the white house is really focused on this as a plm, can really unify what's being done in the different agencies we are not going to bring all of the talent across the u.s. government to bear number one. number two, the kind of talent leaving, you know, the fbi, the cybersecurity experts, it's similar to what we have seen in other parts of the government where we atrophy the expertise that we need most to counter the threats of today. and that is absolutely leaving us more and more vulnerable. >> ronearn this week -- or sometime make in the next week if the president sits down with robert mueller. his lawyers are cautions again the sit-down. but if trump wants to sit down with mueller will he get what he wants? because he is not known for listening to advisers. >> that's a good question. i'm not sure we no he that he really wants to. i think it's in his interest to put out the story that he is anxious to talk to the special counsel but it's only the kind of supercautious lawyers that are preventing him to from doing so. because to the public the fact that the president doesn't want to talk hirntly as it should be you know, eyebrow raising. the idea that the president does not feel comfortable discussing his actions both durng the campaign campaign in office with a special counsel. we have not had the issue litigated. ultimately if it is litigated there were potentially be five republican appointed supreme court justices. interesting to see how it plays out. but injury previous pre

ron and i and christie stopped at each site and said a prayer. a week later karen and ron united with survivors at the two thousand and fourteen boston marathon. they cheered their friend celeste in a symbolic run across the finish line. i am angry at what he did and when i see my friends and they struggle and i see other survivors. i don't want my decision to be based on how angry i get in those instances. that paul judge will tool announced the trial would be held in boston. and we have two choices we can either let him stay alive and have his interaction and have his joys. or put him to death and have that be the end of it. they don't get to see their little boy playing baseball anymore or reading him a story at night and in this young man is in jail and he's reading stories that he likes he's got books available to him that he enjoys or he meets with his sisters and gets to see pictures of their children growing up and i just don't think it's fair that they have had their their joys taken away from them and he still is able to experience that. care and decided to attend the trial. i want to be there to see. justice. in philadelphia nearly four years after vicki instils daughter shannon was murdered the police got a lead. in two thousand would there been a series of assaults started to your blois in fort collins colorado they put out a report to police agencies all across the new united states. so they sent from shannon's case to fort coord. the d.n.a. was a match. the suspect was married in. employed at an air force base. about eight o'clock that twenty third day of april. two thousand and two this fellow and his wife walked into the police station and by midnight that night they had a full confession for the dozen different cases. the man they arrested was twenty nine year old troy graves philadelphia's elusive center city rapist graves was accused of multiple counts of sexual assault and one count of murder in the death of shannon schieber. the prosecutor was district attorney lynn abraham. the prosecutor in the city of philadelphia who is known as a pretty deadly d.a. in other words she put more people on death row then any other prosecutor in pennsylvania and probably any a large number around the country. graves was found guilty and the district attorney wanted the death penalty but the she bers did not. it meant they would have to fight for the life of their daughter's killer we had said to each other and consulted with our very large families that what we do if they ever caught a ball we would stick to our present and off someone was going to what camp or to death we were going to argue for a life without the possibility of parole. the district attorney voiced her disagreement and outrage. the district attorney there became very very upset she became very public with her and with her opinion and she said i don't care what the schieber said the death penalty was the appropriate sentence for their daughter's murder. why would they not want. for vicki in sil the answer was clear. we just can't let this anger this natural human anger and pain overwhelm us and make us so then full and hateful because it would just over time destroy us and we know that. vicki and still received piles of hate mail the cues in them of not loving their daughter. you know if you can't stand by your principles when it's difficult they're not your principal. several years past before jerry learned that washington was not guilty. it had to be like fifteen to twenty abuses at that girl who was released from death row that i found out that he was he was innocent as it were out as that's as close calling you know he came of in days in how to execute it as a person. i'll criminal justice system supposed to be the best in the world. make those mistakes and yet when you see a person like earl washington. something happened there. in the aftermath of the oklahoma city bombing in one thousand nine hundred five congress passed legislation to escalate death sentences the result was a dramatic increase in executions by one thousand nine hundred nine jerry was putting to death more than one person per month. and the death certificate reads. death by almost i. you know i don't make sense i don't want to be consider as a person deaths committed almost but that's what it really. sixty two executions and the only kilobit akon seen was myself and i refuse to look into the mirror. she nearly took the life of her washington and couldn't help but wonder if there were others. research now shows that for every nine executions there is one inmate found innocent and exonerated. one out of ten who might have been mistakenly put to death. join me every thursday on the elec simon chill and i'll be speaking to guests of the world of politics sports business i'm showbusiness i'll see of that. and what politicians do subtly to. put themselves on the line to get accepted or rejected. so when you want to be president i'm sure. most somewhat want to. have to try to be close to see what the forecast three of the four can't be good good. i'm interested always in the waters of the house last. question. back. in one. game. to. play with. the little that was like going to be. played. it. didn't get. nearly two years after the bombing the trial was about to begin. karen left her home in new hampshire early to arrive for the opening statements. it was the first time she had scenes are naiads since the arraignment. inside the court room karin and the other survivors were seated just twenty feet away he refused to look at them. the defense team would make the case that zacarias are najaf was unduly influenced by his older brother. the prosecutors would argue that he was fully responsible for his actions. many victims shared their experiences including the father of eight year old martin who described having to choose between comforting his dying son and saving his daughter. over the next four weeks karen and other survivors relive the horror of the bombing. they reached out to each other for support. coming to court it was amazing how quickly and how close we all got it with where like a family. but her husband ron stayed away. since the bombing ron has changed and it's a hard thing to watch the man that you. struggle so desperately and be so angry he's just not the same as he was before the federal jury convicted the hearts are naive and all thirty counts he was facing for the boston marathon bombing just eleven hours the jury found her native guilty of all charges now they would decide if he should be put to death. the survivors were divided. karen's friend celeste was for a death sentence. the richards not wanting to go through years of appeals but decided against it. it's a long tough process to really examine. why you feel what you feel. you really have to look at yourself. pretty hard to decide. as soon as vicki and sil learned the identity of the man who raped and murdered their daughter vicki wanted to know more. i want it i want to know why i want to stand what he did why was this going forward like that what was going on where was his background with that you have to talk to his mother
