the air force has declined. when they went to war in the persian gulf and i was on the national security council's staff and never have come home. never came home. so 27 straight years of combat operations with the united states air forces engaged. they had 134 fighter squad rons and today we have 55. the pace of operations is one of the things that is driving the difficulty of retention of a crew. we are burning out our people. we took the first piece of the study and the interim report to congress. we promised them in the august/september time frame and that looks up. that study looks at what those national defense strategy asks us to do and how we best do it with war gaming and model simulation and what would that general mix of forces be? that was the first piece of it. we decided to share that not only with the congress and more publicly last week, it is not intended to influence the budget. it is it a long- term view and how the threat is changing. so that the air force can provide a sense of where we thin
