"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live in cupertino. kris, how many homes are we talking about here? >> reporter: you don't have to live in cupertino to have been here or past it. it is a giant thing and that is why the development plan is also big but today the city of cupertino is talking about the site's specific plan a precursor to any development. the city council will look at the plan that would generate at minimum 2,000 residential housing units, 600,000 square feet of commercial space, 750,000 feet of office space, 339 hotel rooms and six acres of open space. these numbers could increase more if cupertino changes its rules regarding housing density. as it stands right now, the three-story mall is a ghost town with a handful of businesses still open. the last time i brought my kids here i think we had the whole place to ourselves. the developer sam hill is putting forward the plan it says it will provide housing for all income levels in a transit oriented neighborhood with open space accessible for all cupertino residents. some re

nbc's bay area's kris sanchez joins us now. >> reporter: the board meeting and protests outside are going on and a lot of folks that you see in the video dressed in white are related to the 28-year-old man shot and killed by b.a.r.t. police back in january. a woman was also stabbed to death on a public platform. her death was the push behind greater safety. however, a lot of riders say safety cannot come at the expense of their privacy. here's the back story. the privacy story did hit a fever pitch when it was reported that b.a.r.t. shared the license plate information of 58,000 vehicles at the mcarthur b.a.r.t. station and shared that information on a database available to customs endorsement. adding to the issue the license plate readers were installed without public notice. the b.a.r.t. spokesman explains at some point the cameras were accidentally activated and began to sell data to the northern california regional intelligence center. it's unclear when exactly this happened. bpd wasn't aware this was happening until november 6th of last year, and once it was discovered this system ha

today in the bay's kris sanchez is live in morgan hill. chris, this really has been going on forever now. >> reporter: yeah for a lot of folks who live in the south county, southern side of santa clara county, you know the idea of a private high school here, catholic high school was floated about 14 years ago. in the meantime, the diocese bought this wide open farmland. here's a map. murphy to the west, barrett to the north and farmland to the east. it is complicated -- i had to get a civic lesson on this one. i want to walk you through. the diocese owns the land but can't develop it until it has city services like water and power. in order for that to happen the city has to annex the land that it is bringing into the city limits. approval for annexation can only come from the state mandated agency intended to protect open space, agriculturalland and urban sprawl and promote official service delivery. with those aims in mind they have said no to prior development plans. this time the diocese is proving that annexation is the only way to bu

kris sanchez is live in gilroy with the suspect and how he ended up so close to the children. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. we will show you video in a moment that does not capture the chaos of the moment when the suspect was driving on a field here behind me, close to all of those players who were on the field, along with their parents and other fans. and when gilroy police arrived on scene, the suspect was trying to drive away from the location. the suspect allegedly drove his car into an officer on foot, gilroy police say that officer was basically cornered and had no way to get to safety, other than to discharge that officer's weapon, so that officer is now on administrative leave pending the investigation. the suspect after that gunfire happened lost control of his car, and eventually did surrender to police. so here's what we know about that suspect. according to the initial law enforcement bulletin out of fresno, the suspect is a former police officer and has access to firearms. he twice called 911, mentioning the football tourna

today in the bay )s kris sanchez is live with, yet, another delay for people who have been waiting forhis bart extension. happening today - the official kickoff - to a controversial first responder drill-program .. that )s ending its current form after this year. the alameda county sheriff )s office is hosting its last "urban shield" .. through sunday. the program began in 2007 .. in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. but it recieved critical backlash from people who say it militarizes local law enforcement. in march supervisors voted to end urban shield in its current format. the long term future of the program is still up in the air, and will be decided by a newly- created committee. state investigators say staff at two assisted living facilities in santa rosa left their residents behind instead of evacuating them as the deadly tubbs fire approached. the california department of social services is giving "oakmont senior living" legal notice -- the state plans to revoke the licenses of "varenna" and "villa capris". the state says staff at villa capris abandoned 20 elderly clients

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is here to answer that for us. break it down for us. >> the teachers really have to be relieved about this one. you might remember they were so fed up with working without a contract, that they voted to go on strike. so the good news is that now they won't have to walk off the job. let's take a look at some of the specifics here. this is a contract that offers 4.5% in raises over the next three years. but the initial raise is retroactive to july of last year, which means they'll be back at the bargaining table in the next two years. the contract also caps smaller class sizes and that is only in voters tax coming up in november. it keeps art class in fourth through sixth grade classes. the teachers association and the district have been going back and forth for 16 months now, and the only way the two sides were able to reach an agreement was with the help of a state-appointed negotiator. for their part, the evergreen school board will vote to accept the deal at their october 18th meeting. the district spokesperson t

. >> kris sanchez at the san jose dmv. tens of thousands of voter registrations may have been mishandled? >> yeah, the california dmv may have a lot of folks going now what? now that they're revealing they botched the voter registrations of a lot of folks who have come in and waited in line and expected they would be automatically registered. as of april, californians could automatically register to vote while they were already at the dmv for other business, and just last night, the dmv revealed it sent incorrect information to the registrar of voters, affecting 23,000 voter registrations. specifically voter choice related to political party, language that they want the material in, and vote by mail status. that news overshadows a decrease in the dmv wait times. people now waiting 21 minutes less on average, but one california assemblyman said hold the applause. >> patting themselves on the back from getting two thirds of their windows empty to half of their windows with individuals there to help out. >> all right, so as t

. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live from menlo park to talk about the h1b spr visas. >> reporter: we're talking about the h4ead visa, this could put the squeeze on a lot of silicon valley companies that depend on the h1b visas to bring in talent to work here in the silicon valley. i want to show you what that proposed ban is. look at the proposal by the department of homeland security. this could be a ban on h4 employment authorization visas, which are now available to spouses of h1b visa holders and their children under the age of 21. there are about 125 people affected by this last year. homeland security cites unfair competition for u.s. jobs and a court filing wrote the ban could come within the next three months. now unlike h1b visas which tech skilled worker, there is no requirement regarding the education or where these folks can work under that h4eab visa and no cap on the number of visas that could be issued. if thousands can't earn their income here it's hard to make a living in the silicon valley on just one income. according to one tech ceo those h1b worke
