he was a young man and would not give up his comrades even when he was standing on the gallows at the rope around his neck. the union general says last chance. he refused. he is hanged. he will become a southern martyr to the confederate cause. he will come -- he will become legendary. there is a statute to him outside the tennessee state house in nashville today. for every sam davis, there were lots and lots of operatives north and south who were executed. we do not know who they all are. i found one in his name was oliver smith rankin. it is probably typical to what happened to many. he was arrested on a scouting mission in tennessee. he was swept up by a confederate control. they do not want to mess around with him. they knew he was a scout and they dragged him and executed him and left him. that not know how many fate awaited a lot of them. scouts, thered was something -- and this, i thought this was going to be the dullest thing i have ever encountered in intelligence. the interrogation of enemy prisoners and deserters. i thought, what possibly could that do to make a commander's
