i could make a strong case for a bigger coast guard. i will run the coast guard i have. some of the new platforms, if we may not have predictable funding, do bring associated growth there, but one of the realities. maybe it's a myth, we're replacing 50-year-old medium endurance cutters, that will be 56-year-old ships by the time we replace them. there's additional cost on all ships but the new ships are tremendously capable. but a ship crewed with 128 ships that replaced a 1960s, '70s vintage high endurance cutter with 175 ship meaates, the new ships are technologically sophisticated. a lot more maintenance is done with contract support. it costs me almost 200% to sustain a national security cutter than the 378 ship it replaced. just because they're bigger, more capable. it's the ship we need. but there's a certain, you know, the new assets have a tail. we call it a support tail that go with them, too. just getting the procurement funds without the operating funds kind of drives you to a challenging space with regards to service readiness. >> john grady with usni news. a

dianne gallagher is on the coast line. what do you see in there? we were on the coast line. it became too dangerous for us to stay. we have been out here, steady rain, the rain has picked up and gone down. you can feel almost when you talk about the bans coming in from hurricane michael here. about 12,000 people live here. a good chunk of them did get out of town. we are on an island connected by a bridge to the mainland. there was plenty of people yesterday afternoon who were walking around enjoying the beach and the sunset saying we can definitely ride out a category 2. at this point, first responders are not going out on calls. they said they will go after the storm. within panama city beach, the mayor says he thinks that so far so good. everybody is stuck with the short notice. michael formed really quickly. the wind is starting to push the rain one direction. it is coming down another direction. we are starting to get the typical hurricane rain from all sides right now. the mayor says they think they will be okay in good conditions. several shelters are completely full.
