so talking to group like vote latino and people organizing rallies and strategies to get latino votersnd effective and they're starting to see more enthusiasm. i was in line for the president obama speech, working lines, talking to young latino voters. they say they're enthusiastic but democrats are sweating this. this is a huge block of voters that normally register as democrats and in 2014, only about 27% of those registered actually went out to vote. this is something that we have seen a lot of strategists sweat over in the recent days and months. we'll have to see if it's paying off, all of the work that's being done on the ground. >> let's talk briefly about the senate case in particular. president trump's job approval rating stands in nevada at 48%, 49% disapprove. right now this is one of the rare kind of split senate delegations. katherine cortez mastio, a democrat won in 2016. dean heller, a republican often called the most-endangered republican. what is your state of mind on that place? >> i think republicans, particularly ones running in that senate race, dean heller as you

he doesn't want to talk about latinos, and especially latino immigrants as people willing to do two and three jobs in order to try to move up and attain their american dream, he only wants to talk about luteenose and immigrants especially illegal immigrants as gang members, ms13 members, perp trait horisk crimes, murdering white people in specific seems to be his point of interest, and he has no interest in an accurate picture therefore of life in minority america. that's why you have to remember that when trump declared that black people have nothing to lose by slowing for him, he wasn't talking to a black audience. he was playing on working class white racial anxiety, and to my mind igniting fear about poor black people, just as he sparked fear of latinos and immigrants of color, all are a threat to move into a white neighborhood, to take a job, a threat to mug somebody, a threat to drive up taxes by adding to the burden of social welfare programs. for white audiences candidate trump made himself the hero standing in the breach holding back the barbarians, willing to speak the truth,

sometimes take latino voters for granted. that they don't take the steps necessary to reach out. either through spanish language outreach or ads. there is some truth to that. but ultimately, this is a question not of, like, where latino voters are, because they're with democrats. but whether they're going to turn out and actually go to the polls in a mid term year. >> i think the fundamental misunderstanding the left has with the immigration issue is they see it as a race issue. it's not a race issue, especially those listening to donald trump. it's an economic issue. they see immigration as low-wage workers coming into this country, depressing wages, taking jobs and it affects disproporti disproportionally, and he thinks it's a good thing from the standpoint of race, because it does affect people of color. and that's a message that the president -- look at the numbers. look at his numbers among african-americans, look at his numbers among hispanics. you think there is no way a man who says some of the outrageous things he do

you need a microscope to see the turnout of latinos in 2016. and you ask yourself, what could president trump possibly said or done during the 2016 election that would motivate latino voters and yet it hardly went up at all. that's what we're going to be watching the next couple of polls, to see if it's the same as the nbc/"wall street journal" poll. >> there's a little bit of a different equation, i think this year, given the political circumstances that we're in. 2014 midterms had the lowest turnout in three decades. but 65% of registered voters say they have high interest in next month's election, that's the highest since 2006. what do you see in terms of voter turnout. for whom, which side? >> i mean we have got two different elections this year, and one election is for the u.s. senate, and it is overwhelmingly in red, republican conservative states and the kavanagh thing really galvanized them. nine of the 13 closest senate races are states that trump carried. so the kavanagh fight galvanized the conservative republican vote in those state
