joining me with shimon prokupecz in studio is josh campbell. we have been watching this this morning. your perspective on what we're seeing play out in plantation. the van towed away, the tarp put over the top. >> this is fascinating. we have been sitting here discussing, obviously, as the development have unfolded. there's something making law enforcement officers place a tarp over the van. we believe it might be the suspect's van. this is not normal when you're moving evidence. if you think about, we have seen vehicles on tow trucks before being moved from crime scenes. some cases i worked, we would package up a vehicle if there was a question of whether evidence might come out of it or as you're moving it from crime scene to the police station, but the undercarriage of this vehicle is not being covered. there's something that at least in my judgment, i am just assuming here based on what we're looking at, that perhaps law enforcement officers don't want us to see right now as they move this. they know once an arrest is made, it will be high

i will add on to what shimon was saying. i spent 25 years in the fbi and 8 in the military, you never get used to scenes like. that it doesn't matter. you learn how to compartmentalize and how to numb yourself, but to see career professionals and see them visibly moved, it had to be often. >> you heard it in the voice of the pittsburgh public safety director, his voice was kwifring and holding back tears when he said it is a horrific crime scene, one that he has never seen. >> he has been through plane crashes, and this is much worse. and you hear this from law enforcement officers, after these kinds of scenes, who have to go in there, and start to, in essence, pick up the piece, right? the investigators have to go in, and it is never a pretty sight. >> we have some information on this 46-year-old robert bowers, the suspect here in this pittsburgh shooting. a federal law enforcement official telling cnn that robert bowers' social media postings are a focus of their investigation, into the mass shooting at the tree of life sy

first, let's go to shimon prokupecz. what are you learning? >> reporter: six devices that investigators are looking at. the manhunt for the people or the person who is responsible for this is still under way. the fbi just releasing photos, new photos of one of the projects that this bomb came in. we believe that's the one that was addressed to hillary clinton, wolf. and clearly, investigators are not saying much about where they are in terms of trying to find the person or the people behind this whole series of bombs. but certainly, a lot of concern across the country now. the fbi's joint terrorism task force is running this investigation. they have increased the size of investigators, assigned to the investigation. remember, this all began monday night when one of the first pipe bombs was sent to george soros' home in new york, and from there, the fbi certainly has expanded the investigation with the discovery of new devices sent to hillary clinton, barack obama and, of course, now the one at cnn, which now investigators are reviewing. they h

shimon, what have we learned about these improvised explosive devices, as christopher wray calls them? how were they made, and were they armed? >> yeah, so the fbi director explained at the press conference and also in the court documents, basically, the way they're described, they're six inches of pvc piping, there was a small clock, according to the fbi director. batteries, wiring. and there was energetic material. that's the explosive material all in these bombs, all cland n contained in these devices. the question they're not answering, where were these made and how did he know how to make this? what's interesting, he was thrown out of his mother's house. he was living in a van. so where would he have put these together, and where would he have learned or perhaps it could have been on the internet. where would he have gone to know, to learn how to put this together? that's not answered right now in any of these court documents, wolf. >> josh, i used you used to wore fbi. take us to the lab at quantico, virginia, where these bombs were taken. how did they actually discover the dna,

shimon, you were on the set yesterday working the phones while some of it were unfolding. do investigators have any leads today? >> i am still working the phones and have been doing it all night. there's a lot of optimism about where they are right now, and certainly having all of these devices, i think, there's probably more than we -- we just don't know a lot about what kind of forensic evidence they have been able to gather off of the devices, whether it's dna or fingerprints but there's optimism among law enforcement that we could see something happening here soon. it's very significant they know where the packages came through with the site. there's a heavy focus on the south florida area right now by investigators in trying to determine if the person responsible for this lives in that area. >> okay, phil. you have south florida now, and there seems to be a key interest in that, it's real. you have been telling us that the post office doesn't deliver mail, they track it. so what is happening? >> if you look, we know one piece of this, and think of this as sort of over

shimon, crime and justice reporter. josh campbell and art roderick. josh, first to you. among the wounded, so the seventh wounded, is the shooter. >> that's right. what we've been asking ourselves up to this point is what happened the moment the person was taken into custody? was there an exchange of gunfire? how did the wounded, the injuries actually take place, and we're learning there from officials that they're saying that the officers were wounded. there were four officers injured in this incident, and interestingly enough, the subject himself suffered what the official was calling multiple gunshot wounds. the subject was in the hospital now and described as in fair condition, but that describes that there was at least some exchange of gunfire. both sides injured here. one thing that's interesting, i can only imagine what that crime scene looks like right now. you mentioned the special agent in charge. i know bob jones, he is one of the most buttoned down, emotionless by the books, just the facts person and say this is the most horrific thing i've seen in my career.

shimon prokupecz joins us now.ond package also a suspected explosive device, the one targeting president obama? >> yeah, it was. the secret service in their statement describing they intercepted two suspicious packages. they say the packages, meaning both, were immediately identified during routine main screening proceedings as potential explosive devices. now, i've been talking to law enforcement officials, both in new york and here in washington, d.c. obviously everyone treating this very seriously. what i'm told is these packages, once they were received and intercepted, was that authorities had detonated them, meaning they didn't take any chances. they identified them as possible explosive material. so what the procedure is here is they move it off site or to an area where they can detonate it, explode it themselves, and see exactly what was inside. i'm told obviously this may be linked to a third pipe bomb that was sent to george soros' home. right now authorities are investigating all three incidents as being

wasn't to bri i want to bring in evan perez and shimon prokupecz. you're getting new information from your sources, evan. what are you learning? >> one of first things that the investigators are doing is trying to figure out where these packages went through the mail system, which facilities in the u.s. postal service. one of the things they have been able to isolate is that at least -- several of these packages were handled by a particular facility in florida. this one in opa-locka florida, north of the city of miami. this is one of several mail processing facilities in that area, that handles mail for the miami area, the general south florida region, and so the question is, you know, was the person who did this -- were they in south florida, did they come to south florida to drop these off? i think this is one of the first clues we're getting as they try to narrow down where this originated from, where the packages originated from. postal service is going to be a key part of this investigation. i think you're beginning to see a little bit of that.

shimon, talk to me about the two packages addressed to biden. >> those packages overnight, the fbi and local police were able to get to the packages. they were safely removed. we have a photo of one of those packages, exactly similar in ways of the other packages, between the postage -- >> all the stamps. >> all the stamps, the return address, the type of envelope, the type on the label. so all of that very similar. the weight of the packages is similar. i'm also told that the design of what's inside, these pipe bombs in some of these packages, like the one sent to robert de niro also similar. so everything here is adding up. the question really on everyone's mound ind -- well, ts two things. who is this and also is this a hoax? this is ludicrous. if you talk to people at the fbi, these are bombs. they could have exploded. whether or not they were meant to explode or there was a design flaw, that is what they are investigating. that's what's going on now. they're going back, trying to find out where the parts were purchased for these device, everything from the electrical, the black ta

i want to go to shimon and josh ott charges. now 29 counts. >> that's right, brooke. 29 counts. just in now, the department of justice, the u.s. attorney's office in pittsburgh filing the charges, saying a judge just signed a criminal complaint charging robert bowers with 29 counts setting forth federal crimes of violence and firearms offenses. the statement goes on to say the crimes of violence are based upon the federal civil rights laws prohibiting hate crimes and that the fbi in pittsburgh is leading the investigation. just to go over what some of these counts are with you, it's 11 counts of obstruction of exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death, 11 counts of use of firearm to commit murder during and in relation to a crime violence, four counts of obstruction of exercise of religious beliefs resulting in bodily injury, and then three counts of use of discharge of a firearm during and in relation to a crime. so there you go. all the counts. the most important thing, obviously, that is he's now charged with a hate crime. federal civil rights violations. >> which is w

>> shimon, thank you very much. much more now on the mystery of how some of these packages got around the country without postmarks. so it is strange, renee. explain some of them do not have postmarks. >> reporter: so what we know is that several of those suspicious packages were missing this critical clue that could have helped investigators, and we're talking about the postmark. it's not visible in the photos of several of the packages that cnn has reviewed. although one of the packages had a postmark, and that only adds to the mystery of where these packages originated from. as you heard shimon say, authorities believe that several of the packages went through that opa-locka, florida processing and distribution center, but that still doesn't tell them exactly where the packages originated from. as you know, the postmark indicates when and where the mail was sent from. you usually see it marked over the stamps. you cannot trace stamps, but a postmark could help investigators focus their search, but it's unclear wh

shimon, you have new information. what can you tell us? >> this is going to be a big clue for authorities. as it relates to the device that was sent to cnn, i'm being told by law enforcement officials that that device was not mailed, police believe it was dropped off by a currier to the columbus circle address to cnn. that will be potentially a big clue for authorities. we don't yet know when it was dropped off. but certainly now police have more to work with. they can ask the company, the courier, who dropped this off, how did this come to you. so that is now in full swing. that investigation of trying to determine how the courier got their hands on it, there's also going to be surveillance video from the cnn building they'll be able to look at. just so viewers are aware, at the cnn building in new york, there's a separate area where couriers can bring stuff, when you're a messenger to drop off at the building. there's the process by which this was delivered, through this messenger center by the courier. >> if you haven't been around new

shimon, what else do we know about this latest meeting between bannon and mueller's team. >> this is're told bannon has met with the special counsel. significant in the sense that we know there's this ongoing probe of roger stone and whether or not he had any knowledge ahead of the release of those emails and so we're told that this was the focus of some of the questioning by the mueller team of whether or not roger stone had some knowledge in advance, you know, keep in mind that bannon both worked on the campaign and also obviously worked at the white house so the thing here that the special counsel we're told has been trying to figure out whether or not roger stone if he was communicating with wikileaks and had knowledge, did he tell anyone ahead of time about this and that could be perhaps why the special counsel and investigators were talking to bannon. we don't know significant also we should say is that bannon has not testified before the grand jury so just a meeting with the special counsel with their investigators and we'll see. there's always a chance that bannon could be br
