tyndall was in the eye of the storm as it passed through panama city.anes that couldn't be moved because they were being repaired and couldn't fly. the air force base is home to a large fleet of more than 50 state of the art stealth fighter f-22 jets each costing more than $150 million apiece. officials here at the pentagon tell me 17 could not leave the base when the air force relocated the rest of the jets to ohio. a few were severely damaged. what has been true about the f-22 for some time is that about half of the fleet cannot fly due to maintenance issues. you'll remember at the height of the counter terrorism fight, robert gates convinced congress to shut down the f-22 production line. in fact, the air force chief at the time general buzz moseley was believed to have been fired in part because of his desire to keep the f-22 line open. now it is very expensive, if not impossible, to get parts for those f-22's. planes have to be cannibalized to be fixed. a recent report found the original manufacturers no longer make the parts or are out of business

yesterday i was the first in to tyndall air force base. and it is demolished. the older buildings are history. the newer buildings withstood the storm, but there is some severe repairs. the commander had to evacuate 11,000 personnel within a 20-hour period of time. and most of those base housing homes are damaged beyond repair. right now, the commander is trying to get it safe enough so that the families can come back and try to claim some of their possessions. but i do believe that tyndall air force base will be rebuilt, it will be a modern air force base of the future. and the reason it won't be shut down, it is a critical mission right there next to the gulf testing and training range, which is the largest testing range for the u.s. military in the world. >> were all the u.s. air force -- aircraft evacuated, flown out in advance? >> no. and i'm not allowed to give you the number that remained. but there will be varying degrees of damage. some of the hangars were severely damaged. we'll have to see about the f-22s, the t-38s and the f-16s that were there. it

. >>> i mentioned last night that hurricane michael seems to have done some serious damage to tyndallr footage we got seemed to corroborate that. of particular concern were these massive hangers with the roof ripped off. many of those hangers had survived other storms just fine, but obviously not this one. ahead of the storm tyndall said they evacuated personnel and moved all all the aircraft off the base, but apparently not all the aircraft removed so that makes for a very expensive proposition here. 55 of them, each costing $39 million. at least 33 of the planes were flown to safety, but that means 22 weren't. f-22s have sort of funny looking tails with the vertical stabilizers that pop up like bunny ears. it is an open question whether in the aerial footage you can make them out. in this photo you can definitely make out those bunny ears poking out of that hanger that was shredded by the storm. mill stare times is putting it anywhere between 4 and 10. west case scenario four f-22s were damaged, worst-case scenario ten. that does it for us tonight. we will see you again on monday. i
