hundreds of people lined the streets of napa for a procession carrying the body of elena housley. nbc bay area's sergio quintana is in napa and has more on housley's emotional return from southern california. sergio? >> reporter: terry, it was a very motional return of her body here to this cemetery. it is a tragedy for the whole city of napa and that's one of the reasons there were so many people to turn out to pay their respects. just before sunset, people arrived carrying posters honoring the housley family and flowers for their friend elena. >> i played soccer with elena and went to school with her my whole life. it was just unfortunate to be a part of the family that is here and to show our respect and love. >> reporter: as the procession of police cars and a black van carrying her remains drove by, those standing along the route quietly applauded. many fondly remember the last time they got to see her. >> a year ago because -- just the all-american girl in every way. friendly. lovely. good grades. overachieving in every way. and the family means so much to our community. >>

. >>> elena housley is among the confirmed victims, she's a recent high school graduate. >> wayne freedman joins us live. >> reporter: it seems everyone knew her. i'm going to step out of the frame. there is another vigil going on here. her family owned a local store and everyone knew her, everyone liked her, everyone said she was a perfect kind of student. these are parents, these are friends, people who never imagined something like this could happen. in a county all too familiar and wary from mass murders, the news from southern california reopened wounds and cut deep. >> she is an incredible person. >> reporter: when rumors became fact that elena housley died last night, grief descended on napa, especially on the campus of vintage high school. she graduated in june, a model honor student and athlete, a member of student council, whose mother also teaches there. the principal sarah o'connor spoke to the school. >> i don't think this is something that people can make sense of. >> reporter: out of respect, we stay away from friends and fellow students. they wore their emotions on faces. >

eric's daughter, elena, was at the borderline bar and grill last night. she did not we now know survive. adam housley and his wife, tamara, have just put out a statement. it reads in full, shep. "our hearts are broken, we just learned that our niece, alaina was one of the victims of the borderline bar in thousand oaks. alaina was an incredible woman ander with devastated that her life was cut short in this manner. we thank you for your prayers and ask for privacy." again, a lalaina housley lost h life in that bar. among the families, the family of sheriff's sergeant ron helus, one of the first three law enforcement personnel to arrive at the scene, shep. he heard shooting, he ran straight in through the door, was met face to face by the gunman who fired several bullets at him and later in the hospital. sergeant helus succumbed to his wounds and died. the sheriff talked about him emotionally earlier today. listen here. >> we lost a great human being. it's part of the loss, again, of the 11 other victims in there and all part of the suffering that we're all going to go through as family members and par
