and gadi schwartz is on the campus of arizona state university. that is the tough race between krysten sinema and martha mcsally. >> that is right. they are make it extremely easy for young people to vote in arizona and lot of it is going to be coming down the young independent voters, and this is the asu campus that you can see the kids lined up to the vote, and right near the middle of the campus, these are all residence halls and dormitories and a lot of the students will walk out of the door and come over to here, and vote. this is a race that is right now mostly going to be decided by the early votes. we have a pretty good idea of what that looks like. 41% are republican, and about 33% are democrats, and 24% are independents. 75 to 80% of the electorate has already voted and those independents, a lot of them are these young voters. we have talked to some who say they are voting for kierstin cinema, because they see her as an independent. and we have also, people over here voting for martha mcsally, because she is in line with president trump,

gadi schwartz is joining us from phoenix. sunnier where you are in phoenix than it is here in west virginia. i know you've been talking to voters. >> reporter: we're seeing some of these big numbers when it comes to the youth vote for early registration and for early voting. we could see a big turnout during election day. but if you want to know what the youth voters are thinking, you've got to go to where they're at, which is usually right here on their phones. in fact there's so much organizing that's been happening on those phones. that's platforms like snapchat. here's snapchat right there, hallie, that's where you should be. when you pinch the screen like that and go to their map app, they'll put on where your polling location is on election day. they've helped register over 400,000 people earlier this month. so it's one of these things where technology is being used to kind of galvanize a vote. it's also a place where people are going to share their opinions. one thing we've learned from generation z and from millenials

>> gadi schwartz there on the border. gadi, thank you very much. i appreciate it. me bring in raul reyes, attorney and contributor to msnbc.com. thank you for being with us. to touch on a broader point gadi is making, what happens to some of these people, women and children, looking for better lives? the ap spoke to one woman, cindy martinez, who came from el salvador who wants to get into the united states. she said, i see it as impossible for them, the u.s., to give asylum. because of the word president donald trump said, i think this is impossible. how do you see what happens happening over these last 72 hours along the border changing what happens over the next year, five years, decades perhaps? i'm not so sure what we are seeing happen in the last 72 hours will change anything in the status quo today or even going forward and that has to do with the immigration law both in the u.s. and mexico. first of all, all of these people amassing on the southern border, we have 45,000 now, the u.s. is only processing between 60 and 100 a day. so they're not going away. w

gadi schwartz joins us live from tempe, arizona, on the campus of arizona state university. indications are what has been a contentious race between martha mcsally and ch s kyrsten sinema will go down to the wire. is that a voting line? >> reporter: yeah, this turnout is looking a lot more like a presidential election than a midterm, especially when you consider that these are all young voters here. this is a line right here. hi, everybody. they're very enthusiastic about voting. this line is about 100 people long. it stretches all the way down here. you've got it stretching into this polling site. this polling site is right in the middle of campus, so it's pulling a lot of people in. you're surrounded by some dormitories, so they have made it very easy for young people to vote here. they have no excuse not to vote. but we have already seen some candidates down here. greg stanton, he is trying to fill a seat in line talking to some of these prospective voters. you've got david garcia who is running for governor here. and this polling location, this demographic in particular i

gadi schwartz with the lates on this one. >> reporter: right now we are ia southernfornia. an idea where of these fierce are burning. they are really burning. everywhe this fire behind us is completely unchecked. these santa ana winds are it's ng this area and throwing up these plumes and these ember clouds where you can ers flying everywhere. you have a home in good shape. right here you can see that there is a palm tree in itsha fronts starting to basically turn into a torch. we finally are seeing some firefightersome up this cul-de-sac. this has been an area where firefighters are r door to door making sure that people are out of their homes. there is very little they can do to stop theseires once they start. up north in parafose, caia, the situation there so much more dire. we saw families yesterday escaping some of those flames. we saw, we heardep rts that there were traffic jams where people actually had to get out of their cars and flee on foot and then later fire trucks came and had tot you to be an unemotional brit. >> we have always said that the queen wever step

nbc's gadi schwartz has the latest on this one. >> reporter: good morning this is an eerie sight. deserted. a while ago we saw the fire jump from this side to this side and it took off. that's towards malibu. you see the santa ana winds picking up from time to time. this is the situation right now in southern california where there are two fires burning within close proximity of each other. up north in northern california there's another fire near paradise, california, called the campfire. that has been even more catastrophic. that's a town of about 27,000 people. it sounds like much of that town has been completely destroyed. we saw yesterday there were reports of people that were stuck in gridlock, having to get out of their cars because there was fire all around them and then they would take off on foot trying to find shelter. firefighters had to clear the roads. they were bulldozing the cars right off the road. obviously that's something they want to prevent from happening down here in southern california, the roadways, at least the 101 here is completely clear if more people
