juliette kayyem is a former u.s. department of homeland security official, and she's the author of the book "security mom: an unclassified guide to protecting our heland." juliette, thank you very much for being here. we've heard the usual sets of mishaps about this election so far, older voting machines, bad weather, lots of long lines, poll stations not opening when they are supposed to. on the other front, i know that there are a federal agencies that are looking out for whether there'sore malicious activity going on, hacking of any sort. i know you've been lisning in on some briefings they've been happening. what have you heard so far? >> so i pu this whole issue about voting into four fferent columns right now. so the first is hacking, the thing we feared the most, the assians getting in and cnging votes. we're see nothing evidence of that. there's more activity, people are looking in and, you know, sort of on web sites and stuff, but nothing that is viewed as nefarious. that's the good news. the second pool is f

juliette kayyem is here. bob baer as well. juliette, they may not have their trump-putin meeting.he russians are very happy tonight. why is that? >> well, i think because they wafrp cnn as well. and they know what is happening to this president. i think you have to look at sort of the totality of what we have found out today, which is essentially how much leverage the russians had over trump as a candidate and over trump as the president. as a candidate he clear will i wanted the financial dealings for his real estate to go through in russia. that meant that the russians had something on him. then he lies about it, which means that the russians had something on him. and they wanted changes in policy which trump was sort of obliged or willing to do. so the amount of leverage that the russians had over trump, whether it was exposed or not, is something that we didn't know before but now is sort of fully exposed by michael cohen. that's a very, very good place for the russians to be because it's destabilized not just the presidency but of course our american democracy at this stage.

let's bring in now matthew rosenberg, juliette kayyem, and jack quinn. good evening. good to see all of you. jack, how significant is this new development? >> look, it's doubtless significant. this is a very rare thing to have happen, for somebody to have made a plea bargain, a cooperation deal, and then back out of it at the 11th hour. it's very unusual. i mean, obviously manafort threw away a lot. he threw away the possibility of having his sentence reduced. he had some degree of certainty in what was going to happen. mueller arguably loses something. he loses manafort as a witness. although it's important to keep in mind that manafort has provided an awful lot of information already to mueller and manafort has made himself close to worthless as a witness because of the lying that he engaged in all along. so you know, i'm not sure that we know quite yet. to me when i read the moving papers today from the special counsel's office, i thought i detected an attitude of some real anger on their part with how manafort has behaved. but here's the other important thing. the

let's bring in now james galliano and juliette kayyem. both of you joining us this evening. juliette, your reaction to that final message particularly on the thoughts and prayers as he says it. >> he's mocking us and mocking how this nation reacts to this gun violence. i've sat in this chair three times in less than two weeks just on mass shootings, let alone all the other news, whether the synagogue, a yoga studio or what happened at the bar. we sometimes think talking about gun control only has to do with the type of gun. he only had a handgun. the success of the nra has prohibited us or stopped us from studying gun violence from stopping loopholes that exist. and third, you know, essentially from expanding background checks. in this case, do i know that would have stopped it? of course not. if i look at the totality of what's happening in this country, we have to talk about the success of the nra stopping just the common sense rules and regulations that are necessary to just at least minimize the threat. it's not too early to talk abou

by the way my name is juliette kayyem.more important here, is that the president of the united states has changed the policies. there's no question about that, and either you disagree with him and say, that's just a bunch of rhetoric or that's just a bunch of bologna or you agree with him that the policies have changed. >> you're not naming the policies that have changed. but erin, let's address your point. >> the policy has changed. >> the reason why we're being put in this situation is because we're seeing caravans that are larger and larger and larger. we can only process so many people at the ports of entry legally. because they don't want to wait for a legal process, they put us into these situations where we have to take them into custody. >> i understand your point, but can i ask you one important question. do you believe president trump's policy or rhetoric, has resulted in people thinking they will not be processed and therefore why bother, i'm going to rush illegally? >> no, in fact, today -- >> you just have all
