memphis. he was taken to his hometown of tallahassee county, mississippi, some 90 miles south of the city. that is what led to a strike of 1,300 sanitation workers 11 days later. they wanted better wages and better working conditions for the sanitation workers at this time. they wanted to file for grievances such as pension, better pay, better work uniform uniforms, and just to be treated with a little bit more dignity. of course, the city of memphis had just inaugurated mayor henry loeb, who was adamantly against doing this. this is when the strike decided to take place. it began on february the 12th, 1968, approximately 1300 sanitation workers struck against their employer, the city of memphis. this is when the official strike begins. the response to the sanitation , like all other strikes in the past, was met with resistance and oppression. it was not a welcoming turn for people who supported the strike. february the 23rd there was a march that happened in downtown memphis. hundreds were arrested and after dark -- dr. martin luther king junior returns on memphis, march 28, 1968. , who w

they were looking for spaces here in south memphis where we are now in the got an old movie andter fornth transformed it into and transformed it into what eventually became stax records. they are very special people and they really understood the power of music, what they could do, the power of opportunity, the power of empowerment. it was right at time when here in memphis, a time of segregation from a time where blacks and whites didn't mix. but they feel they can do here is greater workplace environment where people can create freely where music it happened in the creative arts could have been in young people without opportunity, not just black and white working together integrated workplace in the segregated south, this is a place where young people were paid to make music, were paid to work in a record store, were paid to stuff envelopes and send things out through the mail. and this was their vision all along. ity did not see color when came to hiring employees are working with people he wanted to do, they came into this neighborhood and they really embraced the neighborhood have

memphis in the 19th century that is that large. what is big is cotton. if you are going to make money, real money in the south, cotton is where you want to be. memphis, very quickly after its founding in 1819, became a center of the cotton industry because of its transportation location. high on the fort chickasaw bluff, right at the mississippi river. so if you are a cotton planter in rural shelby county or parts of west tennessee or north mississippi, you can ship -- you would bring your cotton to memphis so that you could reach the wider world to sell your goods to a large industry. and so, as i said, by the 1830's memphis is an important center for cotton production. and then, beginning in 1857, the railroads begin to develop in memphis, which provides another opportunity for you to ship cotton to other points. in 1857, the memphis and charleston railroad is opened, that connects the mississippi river with the atlantic ocean, which is crucial to the growth of this industry. this means that you can very easily ship cotton being produced in the surrounding region, bring it to memphis, have it ginned or proc

this is 1927 most african-americans cannot vote certainly not in the south but in memphis you have a ite political boss corresponding with the african-american woman about voting that is very unique in the south for that time period of jim crow segregation. memphis is very well known is the 68 sanitation strike doctor martin luther king murder here april 4th 1968. we have in our collection the police record of man named frank and some of the more interesting items we have. first, a handbill from the organization of citizens on the move for a quality which was the umbrella organization of civil rights groups including the labor union the naacp the fellow christian leadership conference and others to court protest during the strike and that took place in february because the men worked in unsafe working conditions because those that were killed when a garbage truck malfunctioned. and the men were paid such a low wage that when they were killed they had enough. and they would strike for better wages and working conditions. it isn't just the labor strike and the local civil rights leaders
