the bar and restaurant was one of the so-called mile houses that marked the road each mile between sanrancisco and the territory to the south, a place on the dusty road to eat, drink, as well as other activities for those in a coach, as well as in wagons or on horseback. this was two years before the pony express had even started. but as culturally rich as the story is, many people either took the stops for granted or never really knew the history of the mile houses, or one of the last remaining ones, the 7 mile just outside san francisco in brisbane. in fact, the 7 mile house was also destined to be a forgotten footnote when, in 2004, an immigrant family from the philippines purchased the place, and almost intuitively understood and appreciated the history that was part of the establishment. and vanessa garcia not only resurrected the old atmosphere of the mile house, but researched and wrote a book about it along with co-author regina abuyuan, and so restored the history and the rundown building of 7 mile house. robert: what's the sense of history you get from this building? vanessa:

mile after mile of this river bed is com pletely mile after mile of this river bed is completely dry,over these hills to get the water flowing again. summer rainfall in catchments meant the hosepipe ban was never implemented in august but it was a time to reflect on the damage caused over the summer. claire uses her quad bike on a daily basis. but one expedition it sticks in her mind, herfamily farm expedition it sticks in her mind, her family farm is above stalybridge which was destroyed by the summer fires and with it went a lot of their livestock. it was quite shocking at the time because the fire was raging, worse than any fire i've ever seen, and we had a big tea m i've ever seen, and we had a big team of farmers come from miles away to help get the sheep off at the time and still now we are getting phone calls from farmers saying, we have a few more of your sheep, they are turning up in various places. just devastation. the area looks desolate nine weeks after the fires, richard is the gamekeeper up here and he now has to manage a fire damaged moorland. very depressing, yeah. to
