the whole goal of the mentorship program is that we could reach out to the members of the department. in my opinion, it doesn't have to be anybody that's an officer or a ranked member, the concept is to be open to the membership in order to have some relationships from the membership to the commission. when i was a instructor at san francisco state university, i had a program called the faculty state program where they were attached to undergraduate students and a relationship was occurring with faculty members so that there could be communication and coordination and also concept of leadership development or just in terms of good relations. so i'm going to try to find some information as to how we can formalize that. the unofficial basis and i'm offering out myself to the membership to those members who are interested in gathering into a concept of mentorship. i have reached out to the black firefighters, i have reached out to the asian firefighters, i will reach out to the rest of the groups to see what kind of interest that is there for us to develop. i just wanted to report that o

talk about the efforts to get more professionals out there to step into the mentorship program. mwapagha: yeah, again, thanks for having us here. we spent a lot of time really collaborating with a lot of the local corporate partners and organizations that engage their employees to become as mentors. so, my role in the organization is to really build these partnerships in the community both here in the south bay and in the east bay, and get more companies involved to get the employees to become mentors. the work that we do is really helping we provide them with trainings tthrough our orientations. and show them about the program, and give the tools that they need to become great mentors. damian: how difficult or easy is it to recruit those mentors? there's a slight time commitment, but at the end, the reward, the gifts that you're offering your students are immeasurable. mwapagha: yeah, no, it's a tough--it's tough. i think in the bay area, one of the challenges we face is recruiting male mentors because we match by identified gender. we match every student if they identify as fe

training and mentorship is a huge piece of it. these are your journey men.hese are the folks that are doing the work for point u.c. we have instituted -- p.u.c. we have instituted train the trainer, so we get journey men and women how to train. we work with the selection committees on how to move past some of the barriers that have been barriers to employment so that the selection committees are truly open. and i am proud to say we had some of the strongest candidates for some of the p.u.c. positions for the apprenticeship program. as soon as that gets off the ground, we will have one of the most diverse populations of apprentices in that particular field. these are some of the positions that we currently have. we have the transit power line worker, transportation distribution line, that's what i mentioned earlier. that's your high voltage. the automotive mechanic, which is a new one. the ougauto body and fender worker, track maintenance, utility plumber and general plumber, so that's both the street plumbers as well as the house plumbers, and that is both w

and are not our youth maybe looking for something more of m mentorship, of a trusted ally for friendship? and i am just wondering where the room for that is in our juvenile justice system? >> well, i think there's a lot of room for that in our system. much of what we do is statutorily driven with respect to operating a juvenile hall, court services that we provide, community supervision. but we have seen movement towards a different type of engagement, where probation officers are part of a team of individuals inclusive of the young person in the family in problem and decision making. that's a significant shift from where we were in traditional probation services, looking at the opportunities to partner with our schools and work with alternative schools and strengthen the way probation officers work with those schools to get young people back in the classroom when they've been chronically truant and working toward their high school diploma. we've seen a tremendous shift in the way probation officers work to engage young people in post secondary educational opportunities, getting them int
