and the combat power of the air force is in the squadron. the squadron is the beating heart of the air force and in the quake of the sequester, a lot of support was taken from squadrons. we're trying to put that in so they can focus on the mission. >> one thing in the budget request i think a lot of people will be watching for is where the f-15-x conversation goes. whether to buy more fourth generation fighters or whether to focus more heavily on the f-35. we're close to that budget request now. can you lay out where the air force stabbeds and what you expect to see? chamer. n: it's a game i just came back from visiting dulles and our red flag exercise. just -- ms. wilson: it's the only aircraft that we have that can call the shots inside contested air space. one little vignette, new, young fighter pilots right out of training, this has his seventh or eight sorty in the aircraft, brand new. goes up to fight and he's up against a 3,000-hour fighter pilot in a fourth generation aircraft, coming up on the radio and says, turn around, you're dead

the air force spends $5 billion a year on jet fuel. if we can get a 25% increase in fuel efficiency in the next generation engine, the changes the tank requirements, the cost of fuel, the ways we fight, we're using a prototyping authority to do that and see what's possible and then we'll set the requirements for the next generation of engine. so prototyping experimentation is one. the other thing i would say is the three services are working well together on a variety of things. one example is hypersonics. hypersonic weapon has -- bombs have various parts, shells, rocket motors, explosives packages. the army, we signed an mou about a year ago on hypersonic weapons. the army and navy had come up with a shell they were able to get to a hypersonic speed five times the speed of sound and maneuver it. ours didn't work. but what we have is rocket engines that we think are better than the ones that they had developed. so we got our engineers working together. a navy funded, army tested shelf a weapon with an air force rocket motor that's going
