i'm sure many of you have guessed this is one of the pikes john brown intended to enslave people with in his rate of 1859. i'm sure many of you are looking at this thing and thinking this doesn't really fit with 19th century warfare. we think of the civil war as being on the front tier of modern warfare. we had a little bit before about the rifle fire rhymes and technology. even though it didn't have that much of an impact, that is the type of weapon we think of what we think of the civil war period. on the eve of the civil war this is the weapon that john brown chose to use in his attempt at slave rebellion. there is a good essay that was published recently on these pikes by a historian named jason phillips. he help me think through the meaning of this thing. he makes the point that even though they look medieval rather than 19th-century, they were the perfect weapon for what john brown wanted to do. he gave a great deal of thought about what would be suited to the task at hand. back in the day pikes for the weapon of choice. they had been the weapon you can stand up to calvary with
