today, i'm announcing two new steps the fcc will take. first, the fcc intends to start its third five g spectrum auction on december 10 of this year. this will be the largest spectrum auction in american history. we will be selling 3400 megahertz. for those of you who aren't experts, that is a lot of spectrum. second, to help build the infrastructure of the future, the fcc aims to create a $20.4 billion rural digital opportunity fund. this money will extend high-speed broadband to up to 4 million homes and businesses in rural america. these networks will bring greater economic opportunity to america's heartland, including some of the great jobs building infrastructure. in closing, i want to thank you again are your leadership on 5g. your white house has advanced your vision in many ways, from international negotiations to much-needed regulatory reforms. i appreciate all these efforts and in the same spirit this fcc will help build a great and lasting legacy of american success on 5g. thank you, mr. president. caroline: fcc share ajit pai spoke to kevin cirilli about the plan. mr.the 5g fast plan to facilitate america's superiority. a core part is to make more spectrum available for the marketplace. we will be holding the biggest auction of spectrum in american history. 3400 megahertz of spectrum that will put a stamp on american leadership on 5g across the world. kevin: 3400 megahertz, what does that actually mean, especially when you look at global competitors like korea and china? mr. pai: we are very much ahead of the curve. right now, we will be allocating more spectrum for commercial 5g than all the mobile broadband providers america has today combined. an influx of supply. we are confident here years will 5g.spectrum to the plodeploy we want that to happen here because spectrum availability is a big part of the equation. kevin: which companies will be driving these auctions? mr. pai: i expect it will be some of the traditional players, but we are seeing a lot of interest from cable companies, silicon valley companies wincing the use case of 5g dramatical
