. >> i'm michelle griego. it happened in fremont. kpix5 jackie ward has the latest. >>reporter: fremont police tells a in a marked car was ambushed by a man with a gun. >> shots fired. >> just before 11:00 last night, a police officer's car was shot at and hit by a bullet as the officer was approaching the intersection of -- the officer made a u-turn and fired at the suspect hitting him. >> we have one suspect down. he's on civic, southbound civic west of washington hospital. >> two nearby officers responded to the shots fired call and a k9 unit was brought in to help secure the suspect. they told the suspect to stop moving, but he ignored their commands and he was able to crawl toward his gun and point it at the officers and the officers fired an undetermined amount of bullets at him. >> this is a dangerous oers gh >> tyaid t was given to the suspect, but he died 17 minutes after shooting at the police officer. >> we're transparent. our goal is to truly build trust within our community. we train our officers if you are shot at, have you to protect not just yourself

good afternoon i'm michelle griego. >> and i'm anne makovec in for kenny choi. this is leading to dozens of flight delays. one runwayreopened a moment ago but the other is still closed. jackie ward talked to the travelers. we will have her report coming up. >>> a massive cleanup underway on southbound 880. chopper 5 over the scene. a crane toppled over and spilled fluid across several lanes. crews are on the scene trying to cover up the mess. three lanes on the right are blocked off and it looks like the crane is upright. this mess is causing a huge traffic nightmare. you can see the backup. no word on when those lanes will clear up again. >>> today police in richmond shot a man armed with a knife. the suspect was a father accused of trying to stop his own family. it happened early this morning. police responded just after 2:30 am on a me on call. the caller said their father a window of the home to enter. the house does has some damage including window that appears broken. the officers confronted the suspect in the backyard and ended up shooting and killing him

. >> i'm michelle griego. police say that may have been intentional. >> anne mackovec say the feds may be involved. >>reporter: police are going to give us information about their condition at 3:00 p.m. as well as release the name of the driver. they believe plowed into this crowd on purpose. it was 6:40 last night when the driver of this black corolla plowed by a crosswalk on el camino real and drove up on the sidewalk where he continued to hit people. 8 people were injured. some in critical condition and the youngest patient is a 13-year-old girl. after careening through the crowd, the driver crashed into this tree. >> he came out of the vehicle, and basically gave up. it looks like he was waiting for the police to arrive on scene. >> he's been in police custody since. this intersection is surrounded by busy shopping centers and there were a lot of people nearby. >> we had no idea what happened. there was two male bodies lying on the cement. they were hit by the driver. >> several witnesses told police there

. >>> good afternoon, i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. the chp says that motorcycle driver died while trying to escape a traffic stop. >> kpix5 anne mack picks up the story from there. >>reporter: chp said the motorcyclist went through the bus lane at the toll plaza violating the law. a motorcycle officer chased him across the bay bridge and this is where he crashed. just east of fremont street on the san francisco side of the bridge. he died from his injuries soon after. the pursuit started just after 7:30 this morning in the middle of the morning commute. the chp initially shutdown 3 lanes of the highway as they conducted their investigation leaving commuters in a messy traffic backup. >> it was like two and a half hours, it was awful. >> some oakland to san francisco. no other injuries were reported in the pursuit or the crash. in san francisco, anne mackovec, kpix5. >>> unfortunately the bad news doesn't stop there. they have cleared those lanes, it is causing a backup that's going to last into the afternoon. let's look live at the ba
