i am a c-span junkie and brian lamb is my hero. i want to know, can we perhaps look back in history through the lens of our modern day and rank some of the presidents from the past through skewed eyes, a skewed perspective, talking a lot about social justice and how we treat each other which is fine, but it seems you have to take the presidents within the context of their times. is that something we could have a broader discussion about? >> that is an important point, something everyone who participated in the poll, how do you rank someone, take andrew jackson for instance. andrew jackson for many years after he lived, was considered an important progressive and it was andrew jackson that, the right to vote was expanded dramatically, he established, and establish the democratic party against big business. and for many years those were considered very progressive and that was the way he was ranked until the last 20 or 30 years but you can't unlock the other side of the coin and i don't think it is a bad thing that modern historians

brian lamb: what happened to him after that?avid: he was there from 1937 until the americans were sent home, a little bit before the war ended with franco defeating the loyalists, the republicans. and he came back to ann arbor. the third member of that group, ralph, was captured by franco's troops and executed. and if you don't mind, when my wife and i were in spain, one of the most powerful moments was, i knew where he was captured and the cathedral where he and some other american soldiers were held, in the cathedral in the top of the town, and to go there, into that church, you know, all these 70 plus years later, and, it still felt like a dungeon of death. it was a very moving experience to do that, and to trace his route all the way through spain. so after he came home, he was hailed at the university of michigan. he and elman, for surviving the war and what they had done. 400 or 500 people came to an event at the michigan union. his little sister, mary cummings, my mother, was there. a reporter for the michigan daily, elli
