let's talk a little bit more about mark twain. we were all fascinated by what you had to say, and i had many questions. one of them has to do with twain's antiwar feelings. tell us a little bit more about that. what are the roots of those antiwar feelings? what are some of the manifestations you mentioned? one of his writings in particular, a generalized pacifism and critique of the war, the civil war in particular. what does he make of lincoln and the emancipation? >> it is a very interesting thing, for example, in the private history of the campaign, he stated there is a moment these adventurous young men from marion county are all in a cabin and they are terrified, and they do not know how to mount a guard or anything, and they hear a rider approaching. and they shoot him. out and they find him and they look at him. thing ons a very long killing, on being face-to-face with somebody you have killed. it may well be apocryphal for all we know. twain,t realize that for any kind of sloganeering, union, was bankrupt. he was not inter
