ed lavandera, you see the photo and you get heartsick. what is the mood there today? >> well, that's a horrific photo to see, but the stark reality of what has been going on here, along the u.s./mexico border, especially here in the texas area, for quite some time. we have heard reports of dozens of rescues by border patrol agents over the last few months, having to jump into the river to rescue people from nearly drowning, but critics of the trump administration say, john, that this is really the push by the trump administration and caused by this idea of what is waiting for asylum processes and these migrants being forced to wait in mexico. the trump administration has put a policy in place, limiting the number of people that can cross the border. the legal ports of entry to request asylum on a daily basis, forcing these migrants to wait in mexico. critics of the administration have been saying for months this is forcing migrants to make much more dangerous and treacherous journeys across the border in illegal ways as we've seen here, crossing the river illegally, w

let me go to ed lavandera. he's in texas for us, covering all this. ed, what more are you learning about this image and the story behind it? >> reporter: we're trying to get the details of just why this family chose to cross in that particular area, in the river, in such a dangerous area. the reports are that the family had been trying to seek asylum, perhaps been turned away at the border entry. remember, critics have been saying for months along the u.s. southern border that the trump administration's crackdown on controlling the number of people who can seek asylum at legal ports of entry every day and essentially forcing these migrants to wait in mexico for their turn essentially to be able to request asylum, that the desperation in that, the dangerous situations on the mexican side of the border was forcing people to take more treacherous, more dangerous options, like crossing the river. so we're seeing this now play out in a deadly way as people try to figure out the more specific details of why this family was brought to this particular area. re

i want to check now with ed lavandera in texas, near the mexico/u.s. border outside the facility in clint, texas, where these conditions are being described as horrific. what can you tell us, ed? >> reporter: well, this is one of the three locations that a group of lawyers and doctors and advocates toured last week and really brought to light these latest allegations and details of the conditions of the overcrowded, what they describe as unconscionable conditions, children who are essentially taking care of each other, sleeping on the floors, not having adequate showers and basic hygiene provided to them. cbp officials, customs and border protection officials have pushed back on some of the details that have been released by that group that toured these facilities or actually didn't tour the facilities, they interviewed various people who were inside. they weren't allowed to tour specifically inside the areas where these people were being kept. so, this was details being relayed to them by the people that they had interviewed. it has really brought out
