torrez was just speaking about this, secretary evans was speaking about this. i wanted to ask mr. torrez, what are some of the research directions that need to be addressed to pursue an autonomous grid. do you think the department of energy has the resources necessary to pursue the research right now? >> i don't think i've done a full assessment to be able to answer that full question but i can tell you about some of the things where i think the department of energy can have some impact. there are some foundational aspects to artificial intelligence application to the grid that we really need to develop further. we have some work going on right now where we're applying ai concepts to the grid as i mentioned, focussed around building out four foundational areas that we think are really important. one is complex systems, and understanding complex systems theory. and the second is big data analytics. the third is nonlin ya linear c. with highly distributed systems some of the linear control concepts we use now may not apply in a highly decentralized type of system, and the fourth are
