foxes anita vogel has more. smart unbelievable. this is so unbelievable. >> reporter: 34-year-old andre moya, identified as the california highway patrol officer killed in a shootout on a southern california freeway, the shooting breaking out in broad daylight monday before 6 pm in riverside. a chp officer pulled over a white pickup truck, determining the vehicle would be impounded. the officer was filling out paperwork and calling for a tow truck. the suspect reached into the back seat, grabbed a rifle and began firing. >> it was a long and horrific gun battle pick >> reporter: the officer was one of the first to respond to a call for backup and was airlifted to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. another officer was hospitalized in critical condition while a third sustained minor injuries. the suspect also killed in the gunfire. several innocent bystanders were also injured, hit by flying glass or shrapnel. one witness said a bullet flew through her windshield. it just missed her and her two children in the backseat. a retir

"justice with judge jeanine" will not air tonight so we can bring you coverage of the horror that took place in texas. we used people use the carts for groceries to bring out the wound. this morning in the 10:00 hour el paso time, mountain time miss say a gunman opened fire in the parking lot of a walmart. it happened when at least 3,000 shoppers and workers on-site. witnesses describing him as confident and a man with a mission. they watched him corner his victims. when they had no chance of escape he killed them one by one. you see men in their tactical gear comforting survivors. it was aemotional day. >> from the shooter we have 20 confirmed fatalities. and 2 -- and 26 wounded. the ages and genders are numerous in the age group. the situation is a horrific one. reporter: the chief went on to say he believes this has a nexus to hate crimes. according to police he left a manifesto before going on the shooting. but the chie

anita vogel reporting live in the los angeles newsroom. anisa? >> hi, rick. there's video.to tell you it's frightening. video shows the suspect attacking one of his victims with two knives. let's take a look here. you can see this is the inside of an insurance agency. one of the stops on a gruesome crime spree. the guy fumbled with something in his jacket and takes out two huge knives and started stabbing her. she tried to fight him off. she got away from him. her hands bloody. she goes to the back of the store where she grabs two chairs for protection. no doubt she thought the guy would kill her. he grabs some cash before heading out the door. police say the perpetrator should never have been out on the streets. >> this person should have been in prison and not allowed to be in our community committing the violent acts. based on his prior arrest record, he's a violent individual who should have never been considered for early release based upon assembly bill 109. >> assembly bill 109 passed in 2011 in california. it was aimed at reducing the prison population and also call

anita vogel is live in los angeles. anita?road daylight, just after 5:30, and all of these terrifying moments were caught on video. you can see officers close up exchanging gunfire with the suspect. it all started with a traffic stop. a california highway patrol officer pulling over a white gmc. he determined it needed to be impounded, and while he filled out the paperwork, the suspect reaches back into his vehicle. you can see here on the overpass, and he pulled out a high caliber rifle, opening fire on the officer. we've isolated the video, so you can see the proximity of the shoot-out. officer andre noye was taken to an area hospital and he later died from his injuries. before being transported, officer moye was able to call for backup. several neighbor agencies responded, and you can see here that officers clearly dragged another officer, another wounded officer safety. 34 real patrol officer andre moye was married in at just four years on the force. >> he was so kind. he wouldn't hear and you wouldn't hear one bad word ab

anita vogel has more from our l.a.u. >> reporter: not too much of a surprise within the last hour, the l.a. county sheriff's department announcing it has fired deputy angel reynosa after they say he falsely admitted reporting he had been shot outside the lancaster station. he said he had been shot on the way to his car in the nation's parking lot and that he was hit by rifle fire coming from a nearby apartment suggesting there might have been a sniper on the loose. reynoso said he was saved by his bulletproof vest but another bullet grazed his shoulder. as you can imagine, all of this triggered a massive response. hundreds of officer, a fire department, even the fbi showed up. swat team was called out and they locked down the area. they conducted a door to door search of that apartment building that lasted overnight. yet just this afternoon the sheriff said he doesn't know why he did it. >> he made a life altering decision. he has to live with it. since may, beginning of june, we've been faced, not only our department,
