for more i want to bring in hudson institute senior fellow, michael pillsbury. 100 year marathon. it is interesting we're using the term sabre-rattling with respect to the trade war, the currency war, and now use it with respect to a new arms race, at least more military tensions. how does this change the dynamics of everything? >> it changes the dynamics. i thought ed lawrence's report is so good. the hudson institute needs to double his pay and come with us. we have been deploying missile defense at the request of japan and south korea. the chinese are very angry about that. they made all kinds of threats about two years ago, when president trump deployed missile defense into south korea. now there is something else being advocated that is a way to, to show the president trump is doing something quite different than the previous two presidents. he is taking this chinese missile deployment very seriously. they have gone almost no medium range missiles to way up over 2,000 now. that threatens, puts in range a lot of our military allies. one way to answer that, d

trade deal possible joining me now is michael pillsbury, president trump's china adviser. welcome to you do you think the chinese are trying to push the market down so that they can get someone else in the oval office? >> no. i don't think so i think there's a lot of misunderstanding about china's strategy and president trump's strategy they actually understand each other pretty well. the chinese have shown admiration and respect for president trump in various ways. they are a little concerned having translate the art of the deal in beijing that he's going to get the best of them. and there is a good chance there will be an agreement long before the 2020 election. so i'm more on the bullish side that this would be a buying opportunity when the market is low. i think the chinese/american understanding over the last year and a half or so has been very intense. these talks with 30 chinese flying here, our team flying over there, kelly, they produced 150-page secret agreement that nobody's seen. all anybody knows on the outside is how close everybody has come. and president tr

the read and this and where it's going is michael pillsbury. what do you think?mething like this is a little wow, how is that possible? protesters were able to take over an airport and shut it down. they're urging members to do the same tomorrow. where is this going? >> raise as lot of issues, neil, that is mart of the vicious debate we've had three or four decades about what to do about china. the idea this is freedom and we have to support the demonstrators and maybe send troops, interfere, this is held by a large group of people. part of their assumption is that china is about to collapse. china is week. the communist part is fragile. a solid hit to support the demonstrators in hong kong, china will collapse and everything will be fine. that's not president trump's view. president trump has the opposite view. he said about six times this year that if hillary had won, china's so strong, they would have surpassed america in hillary's eight years in office. it's not going to happen on his watch, he says. that is a very strong china. he seems to have an aspiration

michael pillsbury is the senior fellow at the hudson institute and author of "the hundred year marathon replace america as the global superpower." the only thing i will take you on is it's no secret. they want to do that. is donald trump stopping it? are we on the path that you would put our country on to stop it? >> well, president trump saw this coming 20 years ago. maybe it wasn't a secret to him even that far back, but i think what actually has happened is, so many of our china experts and the intelligence committee and the think tanks were wrong. everybody thought china would remain poor, number one, and number two, would move to free market and some kind of political reform. what happened instead is they created a state-owned enterprise system with what they call the 120 national champions. these companies are now the largest in the world. china didn't use to have any companies at all on the fortune 500, largest capitalization in the world list. now, china has 120, and most of them are state-owned enterprises. we helped to build it, we helped finance them on wall street, we either

market watcher, i should say china watcher michael pillsbury joins us now. this surely signals a long, drawn-out trade war. what do you say? >> i don't want to exaggerate how long and drawn-out the trade war will be, stuart. i think this is pretty normal negotiating tactics. it began back in early may when the chinese reneged on a 150-page agreement that i was very optimistic about. it covered everything, the agreement covered structural issues, china's purchasing more of our stuff. so some hard liners came in in late april and wanted to redo and test president trump. he's simply pushing back and saying no, let's get back to our original, very very detailed agreement in early may. so i don't see this as the end of the world at all. stuart: not the end of the world, but there's no real chance of a significant breakthrough in the immediate future, is there? i mean, who's going to blink? both sides would lose credibility if they blink. >> no, i think the blinking part of it implies a huge concession. when the two sides were so close together, just as recently a
