we'll go now to gadi schwartz who was at that press conference. and help us understand exactly what the next steps here are in this recovery mode. >> reporter: you've got a bunch of different crews here. this is the coast guard right here, and then you see the fire crews over here. they are briefing. and then over in this building, the coast guard is holding a briefing as well. so you have dozens and dozens of first responders here, still treating this as a very active situation. we're starting to see some of those boats come in, the channel islands are a little bit off the coast here. so they are about an hour away. but we've seen some of the pleasure crafts and just normal good samaritan boats that were involved in this rescue coming in. they have been speaking with members of the coast guard. we've also seen some people, at least one person, that appeared to be a crew member, he was limps, had some sort of injury on his leg and he was taken in, he is now speaking with some coast guard authorities here. but for right now, latest that we've heard

nbc's gadi schwartz has more on the tragic toned this labor day weekend. >> reporter: the u.s.st guard says they'll continue operations overnight. here at this memorial at the home port of the conception that scuba diving vessel on that charter, hope for survivors is starting to fade. we've heard from authorities that they've been searching the shore of the santa cruz island. so far no one has been found alive. show the tragic for many in this small community of santa barbara. we're told some of the divers that were on this excursion were from this area. a little while ago, we spoke to the first on scene. it was captain of a boat by the name of grape escape. he said he was woken up by banging on his hull. there were five men in a dingy. it turns out it was the captain and they were frantic about the passengers on board their vessel. they said they were unable to escape from down below where they are presumed to have been sleeping. we're talking about 34 souls, 33 and one possible crew member. the coast guard said this community needs to prepare for the likelihood that this may

gadi schwartz has the latest. >> reporter: this morning witnesses are still in shock after seeing flamesh a boat full of passengers. this chilling call for help heard over an emergency radio. >> mayday, mayday, mayday. >> reporter: it went up in flames off the channel islands. >> it is just horrendous. i can't imagine the poor people. it must have been just a horror. >> reporter: paul hanson was asleep on his boat when he heard banging on his hull. >> i opened the door and the five guys are there in their dinghy. they are asking me to help them. and their boat is just, you know, 400 yards away, fully engulfed >> reporter: four crew members managed to escape the inferno. under the deck were 33 passengers and another crew member believed to be asleep when the fire broke out. >> did they say anything about their passengers? >> they said all of them were underneath. they told me that there was another exit but it was also blocked. >> so two ways out. >> yeah. >> but both were blocked? >> both of them blocked. >> the boat's location made it difficult for responders to reach. the coast guard c

nbc's gadi schwartz joins us now with the very latest. eriff's department heading out to where this horrible tragedy happened. it is just one of several sheriff's departments that have been sending dive teams to assist in this monumental task. right now that 75 foot boat, the conception, is sitting on the sea floor upside down, so it is a perilous recovery operation, and the loss of life out here is just hard to get your mind around. we're talking about 34 people, right now 25 authorities are confirming have died. nine of them are still missing, and the only people that seem to have been able to make it off that boat alive are five members of the crew including a captain. they were able to jump overboard, swim to the back of the boat where there was an inflatable dinghy. they got on that dinghy, and then they made their way to another boat that was anchored nearby. the captain of that boat saying those men were absolutely inconsolab inconsolable. one of them said that he -- his girlfriend was down below deck. others were saying that there

confirmed multiple deaths after a 75 foot dive boat caught fire off the coast of ventura county, gadi schwartzhe channel harbor in oxnard, california. good morning to you, gadi. what more do we know about this? >> reporter: we've started to see boats involved in this rescue come into the harbor, going into a protected area over here where the u.s. coast guard is. now, this is something that happened overnight, this vessel is a large vessel, 75 feet, called the conception, based here on the west coast and they were off on the channel islands on a multi-day excursion. we understand this was a diving excursion and there were people below deck sleeping. this boat accommodates up to three dozen or so people down below decks. and all of a sudden around 3:00 in the morning there was a fire that started on board. we're told by some people that were around the area that there might have been some explosions from that boat and then the coast guard had to respond. but the boats around there were the first on the scene. it takes a few hours to get out to the channel islands from the west coast from here i

. >> jointing us now from california, nbc news correspondent gadi schwartz, what's the latest on thee efforts. >> reporter: well, right now, the rescue is concentrated on the shoreline of the santa cruz island. they are hoping that some people that were on that boat may have jumped overboard and swam over to the shore. it wasn't that far away. it was only about 20 yards off the coast of santa cruz. and to just give you an idea of how far that is, this boat right here, this u.s. coast guard vessel is about 80 feet. you can imagine, that's just right there off the coast. in fact, i want to show you over here. that boat right next to it that's called the "grape escape." that was actually the boat first on the scene from this tragedy. we understand that some of those crew members, those five crew members may have jumped over board and then swam over to the "grape escape." and pounded on that boat waking everybody up on the "grape escape" and they were able to be brought on board. but there are 34 people presumed to be underneath, underneath in the berth, where there were people sleeping.

our gadi schwartz is actually there.olved in these rescue efforts. as he described one of the things that makes it more difficult is of course you see the flames. they are trying to put out those flames. but at the same time they are trying not to compromise the vessel itself. so you want to put enough water on it of course to put the fire out but not so much that it causes the boat to sink. unfortunately that's what happened. we know that it eventually did sink. only a small part of it was sticking out. so it just makes the conditions even more difficult when you talk about a rescue effort. >> all right, blaine alexander joining us from california. and as hurricane dorian continues to grind its way through the bahamas, it could take hours and maybe even days before we get a true picture of the devastation. but we are speaking to someone who's there. chef jose andreas along with his humanitarian relief team world central kitchen is currently in the bahamas working to provide humanitarian relief for victims of this hurric

gadi schwartz joins us with a live report. what are you finding out? in to thearbor here. we know five people were rescued and a staggering 34 people are still unaccounted for. all of this happened off the coast of one of the channel islands here on the west coast. from what we understand there was a fire that broke out on the 75-foot vessel. it was a diving vessel that was set up for a multi day excursion. that fire broke out around 3:45 in the morning. by 4:00, 4:30 the entire boat was fully engulfed. fire crews trying to get there, trying to douse the flames, but not put too much water on it. they didn't want the boat to sink. they wanted to possibly board the boat and save people on board. we are told the boat in the last hour or so has sunk. now it is an all out rescue, all out search operation on the water. there is still fog out here. but at this point we still don't know what happened to those 34 that were on board. we expect an update any minute. back to you. >> our hearts go out to any family members involved here. i'm sure they are holding t
