abc 7 news anchor kristen sze shows us how a little paint is going a long way. >> every time you drive> reporter: she spent a good part of her summer at the fremont intersection. the high school freshman turned this traffic signal box into art that motivates h. >> get a lot of inspiration from space. i think we need more female astronauts so i made a girl in space. >> reporter: she is one of 15 local artists selected by the city of fremont to paint over utility boxes. >> we are in the midst of painting our 170 traffic signal control boxes to art murals. >> reporter: susan runs the box art program. >> it started out as a graffiti abatement program and it has been wildly successful. it has diminished graffiti about 95%. >> reporter: since the project started five years ago about 65 boxes have been converted into public art. this year's theme was paint something that gives you joy. >> sunflower. >> reporter: she is an art teacher who wanted to share her love of the outdoors. >> my work is about nature so i want to participate. the boxes all give joy and instead of seeing graffiti or at be
